Explorers only hit Australia in 1996. It is difficult to source info locally at this time.
The problem is that when HI RANGE is swithched manually, the vehicle indicates 4WD on the console and all appears well. When cornering or turning however, loud 'snaps' come from the front end. If the switch is thrown back to AUTO, the sounds disappear and all returns to well. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Vehicle mileage is about 110,000.
By the way - a Ford repair manual here is in the vicinity of $600US.
You have to describe these snaps better and the road condition(pavement, mud, gravel)If it is just clunks on dry pavement when turning this is normal since the inside front wheel turns slower then the outside front wheel which would be different then the rear wheels.Since they are all coupled together something has to slip to make up the difference. In 2 WD only the rear tires are driven so the powertrain wont load up,putting stress on the front drivetrain.
If your looking for info on your explorer search E BAY under ford service manual and there are lots available from $6 and up,also some DVD listings around $20 US.
Many thanks Bigbuick. I've been reading similar threads since posting the original message - and what you suggest appears to be right - thank goodness! I owned a Jeep Cherokee prior to the explorer, and things are quite different between the two. Learning, learning, learning.
