Do fuel system cleaners such as STP actually do anything, or are they just a bunch of b-s? If they do work, which one do you recommend, because I am having trouble starting my 98 explorer with certain brands of gas.
I don't know if anyone else agrees, but I am a fan of Chevron Techron. It costs about $5 a bottle and I think it is mainly napthalene. Seems to quiet the knocks and gets the carbon off the valves. I have had some limited success brands like STP and other less expensive ones. They appear to be more kerosene than anything else, but seem to work okay. As for the gas, my Explorer sings for Chevron. Shell and Exxon work well too. I avoid Texaco like the plague.
Agree with katneric on the virtues of Techron -- have used it and Chevron gas for years. When a head on my former '91 XLT had to be pulled for a faulty lifter, the lead technician said the inside of the engine was "clean enough to eat from." He also advised against off-brand or unbranded gasolines, saying he saw lots of carbon build-up in engines run on such.
Have also read that Ford, Chry, and GM all use Chevron for EPA emissions qualification runs due to it's clean burning qualities. Don't know how true this is, but Chevron does have a patent on Techron.
Have had good results with Chevron and Exxon gasoline, and actually a tad better mileage on the latter. (I keep a rigorous mileage book :-)
Best to all,
