I am new to fords and have a 1960 Y block 292. I recently blew the motor. I purchased the vehicle as a recent rebuild but it apparantely was not properly built. I am not mechanical, and I am looking to lreplace the motor. I would like to know what motors are a compatable fit to the 292 Y ? Does anyone know for sure what will bolt in without too much modification. I am not overly concerned about being completely original. I just want to drive and have fun. I don't race it etc. Iearned auto painting when I was a kid so I painted it and it looks great but blew up after a couple months driving. Bottom end rattled like crazy it lost power and I limped it home and pushed it in the garage.
If anyone knows what will bolt in without too much modifications I can likely handle it. Thank YOU. Herbo, Tampa FL.
As hiball3985 said you are pretty much limited to a Y-block unless you want to get into an engine swap. A 223 six cylinder would bolt to the mounts but even that is not simple. You would need a bellhousing for the 223 that is compatible with your transmission. The best solution for that swap would be a parts truck so you could retrieve all the little items you'd need such as throttle linkage.
If it were my truck, I would look for a suitable replacement, either used or factory rebuilt. I took a quick look, it looks like factory remans are available from sources such as Advance Auto Parts. I don't know about their quality but they usually have a warranty. You best resource would be to contact John Mummert FORD Y or Tim McMaster Y-Block Guy. Either can probably give you much better direction than me as they deal with these motors every day.
Don't know where you're located, but I have the 292 out of my pickup stored in my barn. Was running fine when pulled, with just a little bit of blowby out of the road draft tube. I'm located in the TX panhandle if you're interested.
