Wheels Pros & Cons

I’m about ready to powder coat my wheels. I have a set of 4 10” wide stock type rims. But I’m wondering if I should use narrower rims on the front.

Stock front axle and hubs with disc brake conversion. Rear is 70ish Ford 9”.

Front tires 205/70R15 / Primewell 26.3"
Rear tires 275/60R15 / Primewell 27.99"

Both pair are mounted on 10” Ford rims so The chassis is a roller.

Your thoughts?

There are sites that will give you a recomended wheel size range per tire size . A 10" sounds awfully wide for a 205/70 . I'm surprised you don't have interference issues on the front .

EBEAR,
10” IS probably too wide but according to the tire manufacturer 205s will & do fit.
My main concern with narrowing the front rims is in case of a flat and having two different wheel sizes. Sorta mute since I’ve got different tire sizes I guess.
My 56 will have a bed mounted spare tire.

I think 10" up front is too wide. 7 or maybe 8 at the max. And 8" is probably to wide for a 205 tire.

I promise you that even if you get the bead to seat you will not like it and no reputable tire shop will mount that tire on a 10" wheel. For a 205/70, 7" would be an ideal wheel. That tire on a 10" wheel will look like the skinnies that the lowriders run on their cars, unless that is the look your going for, I'm not judging.

I would concur with the other's comments, fwiw. 205mm is 8", which is the measurement at the widest point of the sidewall bulge. That means the tread width and the bead area is going to be closer to 6.5 to 7 inches. That tire will fit best on a 6 or 7 inch rim. 10" is definitely stretching it, no matter what the mfg says. On the front of our trucks a 6-7" wheel is ideal (remember, 4.5-5" was stock width), with 8" being max width, imho. 10's may work, but a lot of that will depend on offset or you can have rubbing issues. My 2c.

My experience is that wide tires and wheels on the front will make the truck want to steer itself when you get into those ruts caused by big trucks on the highway. The 205 tire will work fine but put it on a 6-7 inch wheel. Ten inches is DEFINITELY too wide for the front!

According to an old 1997 Year Book from The Tire and Rim Association Inc. 10" is too wide. P205/70R15 is approved for rims between 5" and 7". P275/60R15 is approved for rims 7.5" to 9" but is permitted on rims 7" thru 11",
The rear tire will be 11" wide, so make sure there is room between the bedside under the fender and the fender outer. Might require a different wheel offset.

Ride height is also quite crucial for tire width especially on the rear with 275's .

Just went out and measured my rims again. They’re 8” not 10”. It’s hell getting old, can’t remember things, lose things, find things in the wrong place.

the Trucks got power steering, an automatic and A/C. I’m into creature comforts.
