cowl ventilator

I'm putting a cowl ventilator seal in my 51 f1. The seal I have seems to small, but maybe I'm not doing something right. IS There a trick to this. ( I got the seal from Dennis Carpenter ).

Most seals and w-strip I have worked with have seemed small.
If it is just a little small,it is probably OK-better to have a tight fit than a loose one esp. on a cowl seal
