My dd van started leaking oil Friday. I figured it was a hpo line or oring. After work today i pulled the doghouse and my initial suspicion was wrong. Its coming from the turbo. And that is the last thing i worked on, so i guess that figures. When i did the kc balanced assembly i followed rebuild instructions i found online. I could have missed a step but i really took my time to avoid any mistakes. And this was my first time in the turbo. Before i pull the turbo. Does anyone think this is a failed oring? I just want to make sure i have what i need before i pull it. I appreciate any suggestions. Thanks
Try retorquing the two big bolts that hold the turbo to the pedestal. I’ve had one of them come loose after re-installing the turbo and caused a little leak. Book only calls for 18 ft/lbs but 20-22 got mine to stay put.
Top arrow,..them 4 bolts just create a tight seal with no oring or gasket between them..
Bottom arrow, it could be just tightening down that bolt or the oring between turbo/pedestal sucks.
You can try to tighten turbo to pedestal bolts.
But i dont see how it could ooze from there to top of bearing housing..But anything is always possible.
Maybe you pinched or disturbed an o-ring while setting the turbo down. You slid a new piston ring down onto the turbine-wheel end of the shaft I assume?

Yea the kit came with new orings. It was leak free for 5 weeks? With the van and access to the turbo its fairly easy to set the turbo on the pedestal. I really didn't expect it to be leaking from the turbo.
I wonder if some blue loctite on those bolts might not be a good idea. At the very low torque spec the book calls for they seem to like to back themselves off. Too hot for loctite maybe?
I think that i probably left them loose. I know they are the last thing i torque. I guess the spider held down the turbo on one side and the opposite was held down by the bellowed up pipes. I guess that's what kept it from leaking the last month.
To access anything in the van, the turbo needs to come out. It should have unions on every fitting for the van turbo. I was lucky this time it was simple.
Tightening the bolts to the pedestal fixed my leak for a few days, but it returned.
I am now thinking its coming from the top arrow. When i reassembled my turbo there were some 3" orings left over. But when i torqued the assembly it didn't spin freely. So i read and watched videos on the kc kit. My conclusion was the 3" oring was for a obs turbo. Coincidentally kc had me order the obs kit as that's what the vans use.
My guess is that oring wasn't supposed to go it the spot i set it. It probably melted or flattened out. And that's why it leaking. Has anyone here installed the kc balanced assembly in a obs turbo?
I do know they are machined to a very tight clearance on the gtp38 turbo and won't spin free until the compressor wheel is correctly torqued onto the turbine. Wasted a day earning that t-shirt
I figured out where i had the extra oring. I removed it and reassembled the turbo. It appears i now have some play in the turbo shaft. This was my original problem. Some oil consumption due to the turbo. That's why i decided to do the kc balanced assembly since i knew id be in it anyway.
Although i feel like this is worse than before.
See if i can figure out how to add a video.
I actually found a video today. This fellow did the same thing i did. Added an extra oring. I put mine back together today and reinstalled it. I could immediately tell i had been losing boost at this leak.
Im going to change my oil this week and monitor the oil level. Hopefully i don't need to rebuild or repair it.
