Question "need Expert Opinion"

I have just purchase a used 2001 Ford Ranger ( 3.0 L engine ).
It has 63,000 miles on it and is a 2 wheel drive transmission.
Does anyone know why it starts to run rough when I try to rev the engine above 3000 rpm's in neutral or park ? It runs great and rev's well above 5000 rpm's when the transmission is in gear.
I am guessing that it might have a neutral idle safety switch of some sort.
It also seems to bog down somewhat when the A/C engages
( Almost sounds like the engine misses at times??? ) Any expert advise before I have to take it to the shop. I purchased an additional warranty when I purchased the vehicle.

Thanks,
Sully

yeah it has a neutral safty sensor. I got a 99 2.3L and it dos the same thing.

if it is REAL bad try getting plugs and witers for it. it required platnum plugs so that might be an issue as well. use motor craft or boch for plugs. autolites seem to make it worse. lemme know if that helps.

Welcome to FTE!!!

Why do you want to rev it up that high with no load?

It has a rev limiter that kicks in around 3k in neutral or around 95 mph. As for feeling the ac compressor cycle, get used to it.

If the a/c thing really bothers you alot, you could spend a few bucks on headers & exhaust and some improved induction pieces.
Having more ponies will help turn that a/c pump.

Well, as you asked for a Professional Opinion, and I am a Professional and I have an opinion - I'll offer it:

"Don't dooooo that."

It is absolutely nothing but destructive. No possible good can come of it. You have a nice truck a lot of folks would love to have -show it some respect. hey, you did ask.

Oh, and welcome to FTE!!

In case you can't tell; I'm the bashful one
