Thumbs up Mileage report V10 using M1

posted October 26, 2003 02:48 PM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi all,
I bought this excursion in May. We did 3 long distance trips Danville Va (May), Billings MT (Aug) and Albuquerque NM (Oct). I've run both M1 5-20 and M1 5-30. I've captured every detail of every fillup. Oil chgs, Auto-Rx treament & Maint doses, Gas treatments. Here's the link to the spreadsheet, see if you see any trends.

I noticed that the highest number you had as far as how many miles you got out of the tank was 414.70. I don't mean to "poke fun" or make light of the V-10 in any form or fashion, but did you completely fill the tank or was that all you got out of a 44-gallon tank?

No Offense taken. It is what it is. On that run I used 38.44 gallons. The Ex is used mainly for towing a 2500 lbs box trailer in local traffic. If look at the most recent mileages other than the very last on Mileage has been improving. Seems the more local driving the lower the numbers.

I'm glad you didn't take offense to anything that I said. Based on what you said, it is indeed what it is. You mileage will die if all you do is stop and go in local traffic. Once you spend some time on the freeway, you'll probably see atleast 13-15 mpg without too much of a load. One suggestion is that you use an octane booster or a fuel injector cleaner to keep things running smoothly. I use a cetane booster almost every tankfull and I've seen quite an improvement in mileage. Cetane is of course for diesel engines and octane pertains to the gassers. I don't know too much about the V-10, but I bet that if you run something like that every tankfull, you'll see an improvement in power and mileage. Best of luck to ya.

I didn't know Mobil made 5w20 in synthetic.

Octane booster is not near as helpful in a properly tuned gas engine as cetane booster can be in a properly tuned diesel.

Fuel injector cleaner is not a bad idea though. Chevron Techron is one of the best. But if you already use Chevron gas...

I'll go take a look at your spreadheet now.

OOOPS! My bad. I've been reading so much about the Motorcraft 5-20 I mistyped. I did use M1 0-20. I hate when I do that....
