1978 F700 Decode
do you have a decoding chart that you can compare the numbers to that tell you all of the different info? Some of my info is the same but I have a different tranny and a couple other things that I wanted to find out. If you could post a picture or link to the chart it would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
cole

It's not a chart, it's the Master Parts Catalog for the appropriate model years.
If you want to post your info, post a picture of the whole warranty plate and I will try to look it up for you.
Numberdummy is here much less frequently now.
Hopefully you can read this. What do I use in the tranny? 80w-90, 85w-90, 50wt (if it is 50w, is it a gear oil or engine oil?). What about the rear end? The small gear box for the 2 speed I have heard is 10wt, is that a gear/hydraulic type oil or engine type of oil? Any idea on the oil type for pto gear box and hydraulic for dump hoist?
thanks a lot
Cole
F70 = F700 gas
E = 361 4V XD FT gas V8. ("eXtra Duty", same as "Heavy Duty" in this case)
V = Kentucky Truck Plant
BB3413 = 1978 numerical series
146 = 146 inch wheelbase
3 = Dark Red Metallic
F703 = F700 gas, 23,000lbs GVWR
4A8 = Standard cab. Upholstery can be determined from this, but I don't have that info.
J = This is usually the auxillary transmission code. In this case it indicates "Calif. emissions less fan clutch"
2 = Clark model 282V 5 speed direct transmission
E3M
E3 = Eaton model 16244 rear axle, 17,500lbs capacity, 2 speed, ratios 6.50/9.04
M = Ford 7,000lb capacity front axle with power steering. (also a 12,000lb axle w/o ps. Do you have ps?)
23000 = 23,000lbs GVWR
231183
23 = Memphis District Code
1183 = Special order number.
Odd that it was a Memphis District Code but has a Calif emissions code.
If anything seems incorrect, please let me know.

80w-90, GL5. BUT NOT LABLED EXTREME PRESSURE
If you are in doubt, use a GL4 oil. Serving suggestion.

weird it says dark metallic red. It’s yellow inside and under the hood with white that’s coming off over the rest of the body. Has a hertz rental badge on the inside of door next to the warranty plate that I posted the picture of but I don’t think that it can be seen so that’s why I assume that was the original color and the whole thing wasn’t repainted at one time. Yes, I have power steering (I probably wouldn’t have it if didn’t). What does a fan clutch have to do with emissions? What does the special order number mean?
thanks a lot for your time and effort to do this for me.

what is the difference between GL5 and GL4? What is bad about GL5 extreme pressure? Any special GL4 to use/watch out for? I’ve heard about gear oil that can be bad for yellow metals like brass, is that what the reason is?

Not sure why Eaton recommends GL5 then tells you to avoid EP additives. One of lifes mysteries. Run GL4.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
As to Calif. emission and a fan clutch, beats me. Maybe Hertz registered this truck in CA, or maybe the intentionally sought to eliminate the fan clutch on rentals.
Special Order number--I do not have info on that. As with color, a special engine, trans or axle usually results in a blank in those spaces on the tag, and then the other components are added after Ford is done with it.
Double check everything you can. It is not unusual for doors to be changed and the old warranty tag left in place. Does the VIN on that tag match your title?
