94 E250 with a 460, when you turn the key to start position it either does nothing or just clicks, after several tries it will start. I originally figured a dead spot on starter so I swapped out the starter, same result. Once it’s running a while, it seems to get better. Any idea’s besides the new starter being bad also ?
When you say it just "clicks" it sounds like a simple, classic failed battery. Are you certain your battery is fully charged and is not internally damaged? Have you tried swapping in a different battery, or tried it jumped to see if it still happens?
I just love you guys who start swapping parts without a full diagnosis of what the problem really is! Parts guys love y'all too---talk about an economic stimulus!
Have you bothered to check the starter solenoid? Does the lock cylinder engage the ignition switch? In turn the ignition switch should engage the starter solenoid---is that happening?

.
the starter solenoid is part of the starter so that of course got changed, unless there are two ? Which I’ve never seen ! The key works fine but could be an internal short ?
If the 94 is the same as a 93 and the battery is on the left side, I'm pretty sure there's a seloniod mounted on the radiator support near the battery. Try rappingbthe started with a hammer and see if it turns over, I've gotten my van started a few times doing that. If it spins over you need a starter.

There is one, but the starter also has one, I've never seen a vehicle with two !
I had to replace the radiator support mounted solenoid on my 96 E350/460 a couple years ago. It does exist. Easy swap, remove the battery first for access if I recall.

Huh? How can there be a remote mount solenoid, The solenoid is just a motor that pushes on the starter gear. Are we talking about a starter relay?
I understand what your saying, but in the older starters, the solenoid / relay is separate on firewall or fender well, the starter is just a motor, yes the new ones have a solenoid / relay mounted to the starter, this set up has both, believe it or not.
