5.4 pinging under load
OK guys.... I think this problem has come up before but I need to hear it again. I have a friend of mine with a 99 EB expedition with a 5.4 in it. It has 55,000 on the clock. We went to Raliegh yesterday and I noticed a loud pinging when the truck shifted out of overdrive on the highway. It goes away immediately after shifting back into OD. It is pinging from the engine. It is not the tranny. Is there a fix for this problem? Thanks in advance!

There are many possible causes for this but assuming you have 87 or higher octane gas in the engine, first check for vacuum leaks from hoses while at idle and while engine is slowly revved up. Then clean the MAF sensor in the intake. After that, check EGR and IAC valves for function.

Thanks TS. I don't know exactly what is and isn't disconnected. It is not my vehicle. I do know that they are using 87+ octane. This problem just started all of a sudden. One day it was fine and then it was screwed!
