I have a 1978 ford E250 (4wd Quadravan) that has just started dieing on me. It will start right up, run for 20 or so minutes and then die. I lose my spark. I have a new coil and ignition module.
After it sits for 45-60 minutes and cools down it will start and run till something (who knows what) in the engine compartment gets hot (? just a guess) and cuts off my ignition.
Does anybody have any ideas on this one? I don't have a schematic, so I am shooting in the dark here.
Also, when hot will turn but not fire in start position, but seems to try to run as key goes to off poisition.
Engine is not overheating, no catalytic converter.
TIA
It sounds like the pick-up coil in the distributor is dying on you. I would just buy a new (rebuilt) distributor. It's easier to change than just the pick-up coil and the new one will have tight bushings so that the shaft runs true.

Thanks lxman, that is what I was beginning to think. I had just about the same problem with a 79 F150 with a 429 and mallory dist. The pickup in the dist went and was giving me the same type symptoms.
Turned out to be the pick-up coil (stator) in the distributor.
I really need to look at getting a newer FI, electronic ignition, more gas station unfriendly motor into this thing.
It is a 78 quadravan conversion that I found in Montana, while 25 years old, it only has 80k miles on it. It just wasn't driven much. The previous owner did a great resto job on the exterior, and the interior is still very good. So, I really don't want to get rid of it just yet. Pius, it come from the age before computers.
