My '88 F-250 has an axle code of 39, I believe that is a 3.55 ratio. Is this correct? Can I buy a 4.10 ring and pinion or is it better to replace the whole rear end? What kind of difference could I expect in mileage? Towing ability? If any of you have made this change, is it worth it?

It depends on what you can find and at what price.
Normally buying a ring and pinion is cheaper than buying a complete rear end.
What

I'm just guess but you'd probably drop 1-2 MPG with the lower ratio...unless you will be running larger tires.
Towing
>ability?
You did not mention what engine/tranny combo you have. For example my 1989 owners guide says a 460 EFI engine with auto trans has a recommended maximum towing capacity of 10,600 lbs. (trailer weight)with a 3.55 gear. The same combo with a 4.10 gear is 12,500 lbs. or almost ONE TON more capacity.
If any of

I haven't done it myself...so I'll let the rest of the guys/gals answer this one. If you decide to change, I do have one set of good used 4.10s I will proabably sell. Deen
