I just bought a '92 F-250 4x4 with a 460 V8, and in knocks like crazy. I have run premium gas, tuned in up, and it still knocks. I checked for trouble codes, and even checked the base timing. I even went as far as to retard the base timing from 10 degrees to 5. So when the ignition module plug is in, it is running around 21 degrees. It still knocks, so I am at a loss. Does anyone have any advice. Please Help!
Knocking or "Pinging" can be caused by more than just timing...1. The higher the engine temperature the more likely to ping. Try changing your thermostat to a 180 degree. 2. The leaner the fuel mixture the more likely to ping. How old is your ACT sensor(air charge), O2 sensor, ECT sensor (engine coolant) they all effect or help manage the fuel system. 3. Whens the last time you ran some injector cleaner thru the engine? A plugged or partially plugged injector will cause a cylinder to run lean...which makes it run hot...which makes it more likely to knock. 4. Is your engine burning oil or smoking? Oil in the combustion chamber can cause detonation also. 5. If an injected engine, what's your fuel pressure read. A low reading can cause the engine to run lean (hot=detonation). 6. Are you sure its knocking from detonation or pinging...could be a mechanical problem such as a loose rocker arm or maybe "piston slap". Hope this helps. Deen
We had a 91 that had the same problem. We replace every thing, from cooling system to computer. Air charge, tps, coolant sensor, injectors, dist, cat convertor, and air charge. We never found nor could ford find what caused it to ping, the only solution we could come up with was to run higher octane fuel. To this date, if we run regular unleaded it pings.
You may have to run super to fix this.
