I am building a Hiboy 4x4. I am putting a 420 torque 390 engine in C6 auto PS and A/C. I had a 2WD F250 camper speicial radiator redone with 4 rows, trans cooler internal. It has the 21" shroud. I have a 19", 7 blade, steel center, aluminum blade Ford fan Part number says it is for a 429. Based on the info I provided what fan clutch would I need for the best cooling and performance
Do the amount of or style of the fins play a role in the cooling ? The 429 has a solid close gap row of fins from the center outward. The 390 has wider gaps and is in 3 sections ( rings) spaced 1/2" apart. Thank you for the advise. I looked up thermal clutch. I did not know any of that. It also explained how to correctly check the operation. I didn't know that either.
Clutches are pretty generic. my Challenger, Ford and Jeep all take the same clutch . as long as it bolts up and clears the radiator it will work. thermal is the best though .
The fit on the pump shaft sometimes requires a bushing and the distance from the fan to the radiator is crucial.
I pulled a 19" fan and clutch off of a later Bricknose 460 in the boneyard, and clearanced the factory shroud for my '75 with 390, works great, cost me all of about $20 as I recall. Never gets hot, not sitting in traffic, not pulling grades, or pulling trailers.
