E4OD Shifting Problems
I bought this truck with 145k miles about a month ago. It needed a good tune-up as it had bad gas, was hard to start, ran like crap, slipped out of gear, and had trouble shifting. I drove it 20 minutes home like this.
Within the first two weeks I did the following: new spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, distributor rotor, coil, fuel filter, oil change, transmission filter, new transmission filter & fluid, new speed sensor, fuel Flush, oil flush, and gave it a good cleaning.
It shifted amazing for a good week till one day it seemed like it shifted a little later than normal but nothing too bad. That next morning I could not get it to shift at all but it would occasionally shift into 2nd gear. It would shift from 1-2 manually perfect, but not in D. I later found that day that it would shift through every gear but only at 4000rpm. Letting off the pedal did not help it shift, only by going up to 4k and it would immediately shift.
I checked the codes and got nothing relative. I reset the codes atleast 6 times and went out driving to see if I could pull up any new ones...never got any. I did get a check engine light to go on for about 5-10 seconds if I gunned it. I see people saying that resetting the codes won't help but just wanted to eliminate that option.
I drove it around for the next two days like that and at one point, it randomly started shifting when it should. Within a minute of this, the Shifting became very rough like it would jerk the truck. When I would come to a stop in D, Neutral, and even Park, it would try to shut the truck off and jerk some when out of Park. That is when I replaced the speed sensor. It immediately stopped the jerking and bogging at idle. It shifted great other than the hard shifting. I drove it on a 3 hour round trip with two stops the following day and it did great, still shifting hard. I then went to the store that day, shutting the truck off for 20-30 minutes. After that, it drove like new, with no shifting problems whatsoever. That lasted maybe a minute and then it went back to how it was 30 minutes back. I drove it for 20 minutes and stopped at a restaurant, shutting the truck off for 1-1.5 hours. When I got back in, it drove like new with no problems the rest of the night. Also meant to add, the truck normally idles at 700-1000rpm, but it was idling at 1300-1500 that night.
The next day it acted like it was shifting kinda late and then there we are again, shifting at 4000rpm. I drove it on a 1 hour round trip with two stops and it never got any better or worse. It does not jerk when it shifts but does not like to stay in OverDrive under 70mph.
Anything helps guys! I am mechanicly inclined when it comes to the engine and drivetrain, besides the transmission and electrical crap. I can replace it but can't diagnose it. Thanks
