Gary, I have the almost the exact opposite shipping problem. I bought a large amount of car parts from a guy in Ventura CA and need them shipped here to SE Wisconsin. Ilya, Panelman, here is helping out by picking the parts up and having them taken to his home in San Jose where he will package and ship them for me. He was able to arrange a series of friends and relatives that were going to the different places on the own travels and were nice enough to help out so it wasn't too much of a hassle to arrange a relay of sorts. Looks like Ventura is closer to San Diego. Too bad there isn't a way we could help each other out. Our shipments could be passing each other some day.
I called Fastenal and was told they weren't shipping out of the western states until some time in late spring. I asked if this has anything to do with the covid flu and the rep told me it wasn't. It had something to do with rearranging their warehouse and shipping systems. Maybe she didn't know what she was talking about or it was just one of many reasons they were told to give out.
Mr bigwin... so I prepare myself please explain what you mean by "the cab is SOFT" ? Please educate
Front corners are rusted out and the rear corners will have holes once they are cleaned up. The rust on parts on this end of the country is different than western rust. Western rust is mostly in a isolated area where as rust here tends to grow a lot further than what meets the surface that you can see. Western rust is dry. Parts from high humidity tend to have rust scale over a larger area. That cab came from Wisconsin if I recall. It’s an ok cab but I’m sure you could have found better in California or Nevada
Ever see that show Shipping Wars on A&E? Those folks on that show go to some web page to bid on shipping jobs. Is it U Ship they use?
I dont know. I remember the Storage Wars show and liked it.I want to relate my experiences here for all of FTE to have so they can learn whatever they can learn from it so if it sounds like I have sour grapes or whatever that may be true but my motives are to relate my experience in hopes someone shipping can see the pitfalls and have a plan a better plan than I had to keep from agony.
I REALLY had/am having a lousy experience with uShip. Tim Taylor uShip "Director of Operations" and I are like oil & water. A few of my questions in, and Ill add I wasnt nasty and I DO Know how to go there, I was perfectly calm and was actually wanting diplomacy. Even so Mr Taylor went to the "If this isnt working for you we can just cancel this and refund your money" This is usually a tactic to set the recipient back on his heals and take power. I wasnt agitated and not emotional and thankfully instead logic minded so I hit him with a "is that how you conduct business? Something clearly has gone south with this shipment and a few reasonable questions are asked and you want to set me back on my heals with that tactic?" I dont believe starting completely over is anything that benefits me right now why did you think to say that to me?". He just said "I see" and just told me to call and schedule when the crate was made and it was ship ready.
Mr Taylor of uShip , in my not so humble opinion, PURPOSLY neglected to mention that this had to be done right away to keep my quote active the quote expires Jan 29th and the shipping and scheduling must occur a few days prior for the logistics/paperwork/scheduling to happen to be able to have my crated cab on a truck at least by the 29th.. I was unaware of this time frame limitation and I am positive when I would have finally called back in February, I would have been blindsided by now finding out what a new more expensive quote costs were going to now be. Fortunately one of his customer service underlings responding to ANOTHER of my emails seeking help. uShip has multiple ways to contact them and I tried them all. The uShip rep I talked to after Mr Taylor made it clear how it really works. Regardless of how this has gone uShip would be unwilling to accept any responsibility for their failures and had no provisions to hold the quote. uShip caused the month to end without the shipment from happening by not directing me to crate my shipment. I was clear with them in the application that I have NO EXPERIENCE shipping Freight and needed "Hand Holding" if that isnt a plea to have someone review and advise please tell me what else I should have done. On line business is full of potential land mines. having not communicated and sending the time period to perform on my end into an untenable place where new quotation is likely they wont hold the price I paid. Ill not risk the health of the guy I bought this from to have him brave the cold weather he is experiencing right now to have him rush to build a crate and get this on the truck this coming week.
I reached out to YRC. I so much as told them I wanted to "fire" uShip and explained exactly why. YRC understands. They are in a tough position in that they dont want to be involved in rocking the industry's way of doing things. They really dont want to look like they are poaching business away from a powerful method of connecting shippers to get jobs. I was not going direct to YRC to try to save money. I asked them if they would deal with me direct because uShip was so unwilling to do anything correctly. YRC told me they would quote me and did. The cost without uShip will be a little bit more now since I apparently got a very good rate having booked in a slow business period right at the first of the year. The rates are higher now so even though Im considering going direct, I havent done that. I will let the guy who I bought this cab from determine how I proceed. If he can safely and comfortably as he can build a crate and have it on the truck on or before Jan 29th Ill keep uShip in play. If it goes longer than that and uShip closes the quote and wants to requote I will decline and have YRC do that from that point forward. I hope no one else ever has a situation like this. The mind boggles that it went this way, I thought I was dotting every i and crossing every T to make a smooth as possible shipment. Take care FTE.

that is disappointing. Thank you for telling me. The pictures dont do anything to show that. I guess I will have to deal with all of that now....its mine. Maybe I will resell it and try again. I was thinking I was being blasphemous for cutting up an iconic style of cab which is what a 1956 cab is Now I dont feel so bad about THAT. It goes to show me AGAIN...I have to do EVERYTHING myself. Like go look and see so I know what really is.

Fastenal, I had a T98 4sp. transmission shipped to me thru them, it was flawless.
It took a couple weeks, but was told this up front.
Good luck with your cab.

I also sent you a PM this morning, doesn’t look like it went through. I’m thinking we might be able to arrange something. Let’s talk. Email me bobj (at) fatfenderedtrucks (dot) com

i shipped a set of F-2 running boards to a guy a few states over. I had him arrange shipping. I built a stiff box out of heavy cardboard and attached two pieces of 2x4 on the bottom. All went well. What I like about using Fastenal is they have stores everywhere, in almost every small town or close by. I have three within 10 miles of me.
