2017 Brakes

I’m getting close to having to finally put new pads on the truck as it just has over 50,000 mi.

I was wondering what others have experienced with different Brands of brake pads and what you have liked compared to the OE pads?

Just trying to make the right decision for my liking. Definitely want something that bites really hard but does not dust heavily.

I went with Wagner ceramic pads from OReilly. Equal parts of what was available that day and price. They stop great when towing, off road, and empty.

It's been something I'm glad I didn't overthink. Threw on new pads and said send it.

Edit: I'll add that rotors did not need to be turned/replaced, no other underlying issues. In my situation it was an easy swap & go.

I've bashed Powerstop in the past but I'll admit that my opinion has changed. I added them to my Wife's van and my Frontier and they are really awesome. Very clean also. I put Hawk pads on my 250 and they bite really hard as well however they are not the cleanest. I may eventually change over to Powerstop on it as well.

This is what I was thinking myself. My rotors look good as well so I think it’s just going to be a pad change for me as well.

I tried Wagner ceramic on our Odyssey and the dust was horrid. Her front wheels would be black within a week.

I'll start from the beginning on our Odyssey. Centric rotors and pads, absolutely filthy. Changed to Wagner ceramic, filthy and rotors started warping. Powerstop rotors and pads all around, very clean and stops on a dime.

I've always went with "cheaper" pads like a NAPA premium semi-metallic pads. Pads are cheaper than rotors. I've never turned a rotor in 200k, never had warping. At 200k I replace the rotors, calipers and start fresh again.

I put PowerStop Z36 pads and rotors on my 2017 and it made a world of difference. Both in how much better it stopped and the lack of brake dust on my wheels. Best money I ever spent on an upgrade. I don't even have 1k miles on my 21 and I'm already thinking about changing out the stock pads and rotors already.

This prompted me to order Z36 pads and rotors all around for mine. Tired of scrubbing my wheels every week.

The only thing is I’m not going to be putting their rotors on the truck. My rotors are absolutely perfect so I have no desire to change them. I wonder how they’re pads would do with the factory rotors.

I put Powerstop Z36 front pads on at about 70K or 75K miles, left rotors alone. Works fine. Bought Z36 rear pads at the time, but didn't put them on as original pads were fine.

How do you feel they work in comparison to the OE semi metallic pad? I figured they would be OK with the stock rotors but wanted to hear from someone that has use them. Hopefully they are a good improvement and that’s the direction I’ll go because there a reasonable price for those pads as well.

I have always used Advanced Auto Parts for my brake pads for my vehicles. AAP generally has 20-25% coupons that make it more affordable than the other parts store. I tend to believe that these are all pouring out of the same Chinese factory off the same line and put into different boxes with various brands. Weaver, Wagner, Carquest, and the other mid-tier and house brands are about the same to me.

Just make sure to get a good brake lube and don't forget to maintain your brake system. Changing pads isn't just as simple as changing the pads! Pull those pins and grease them up with something like Sil-Glyde. Make sure that you grease all of the metal-on-metal points ... like the perches where the pads sit, backs of the pads where the caliper makes contact, etc. Most of the time, when you hear someone's squealing brakes, it's not because they need new pads ... it's because the yokel who did the brake job failed to lubricate all of the moving parts.
