89 150 lock+ignition

I have an f150 xlt lariat with tilt wheel. I have replaced ignition switch and gotten lock cylinder working smoothly but cannot seem to get the rod and lever connecting the two in the proper place. Picture in ford shop manual is useless. Do I need to remove the band containing the shift lever to do this?? Any suggestions or reference to a picture would be appreciated.

Sometimes when you remove the switch the gear may come out, if the lock ring is removed or broken, the easy solution to fixing this is, remove the switch and pull the brass gear back out, now using a screwdriver turn the rack till you get to the ignition part, lights on dash should come on, now reinstall the brass gear to fit the small cover and reinstall the lock ring, now when you install the switch, it is on ignition, it should line up, this is providing you did not remove the electrical ignition switch, if so, you need to install it back the the original possision, by looking at the old bolt marks.
