I want to upgrade my headlights on my 56. I was thinking about the sealed beam type with a removable bulbs. LED bulbs won’t fit and not sure if Halogen will either. The bucket is only 4” deep and there is a spring clip in the center.
I’m asking if anyone has used the LED headlight ( one piece type)they are not as deep and the plug can be moved away from the back. I’d like to see what they look like on these trucks, If you’re using any style (halo, projection) I’d like to see pictures please.
Best be sure that whatever path you choose, the LED fixture that you use is DOT certified for use on road. Many are not DOT certified and have that for off-road use disclaimer. There is a potential for that to haunt you at inspection time or in a post collision investigation.
the daytime running lights can be hooked to flash orange with the blinker .
That's an interesting idea Ebear. I wanted to delete the lights underneath the headlights and was wondering how to hide a flasher somewhere else. I have retro fitted LEDs on my Land Rover and they are very effective so I know how worthwhile they are.
I have the H4 style headlights in my 48. I think they are a good compromise as far as having good visibility, but still look like the old sealed beam units.
Another point. If you go with halogen make sure to install relays. The additional current required should not pass through the stock headlight wiring and switch, it’s not only dangerous, it’s also inefficient and with relays you’ll gain additional brightness.
I went with halogen on my 48, and where they’re a lot whiter and brighter, I can’t quote for the night visibility, I simply haven’t driven at night yet.
Also if you go LED you'll need to swap out your flashers.
I didn't need to on my coupe because I left the incandesent front lower ones keeping enough draw to work the old style flasher , but my led taillights came with a replacement flasher .

Did the H 4 style fit in the buckets or did you have to open or modify the back?

I did not have to modify the buckets at all. I had to connect the wires to the plug with the plug already inside the bucket since the plug will not fit through the wire hole on the back of the bucket, but that might be normal. My truck did not have buckets or wiring when I got it, so I am not sure if thats normal.

Yes, that’s normal. The hole is too small to pass the connector through. I used bullet connectors outside of the bucket so I could remove the bucket in case I need to at sometime.
I'd like to have the best/brightest headlights I can but they will have to be old style sealed beams. Those LED spider eye things are UGLY as crap! Nothing like this going on my truck!
Then you won't have the best brightest lights you can . They are not my preferred look either but to me there are things I can live with for safety and these are by far not the worst . IMHO
