I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. I had a 15' and 17' F250 4wd, 6.2, 4.30's. They each handled 10,000 lb my Arctic Fox Trailer just fine. Air-Bags helped with the 1,200 lb tongue weight. The picture below is my 15' 250.
I tow a 9500lb travel trailer with my '17 6.2 and I have the 3.73 rear end and it does just fine. I'm averaging between 8-9 mpg but no mountains here in Indiana.
Prairie-Pro, my travel trailer toy hauler is heavier than yours at 11K GVWR. As others have said, it's worth trying it with the current vehicle. The one issue may have is squat if you don't have the extra leaf to help.
Should you decide to move up to an F-350, consider going CCLB so you can get the 48 gallon tank. I have not felt the need for an aux fuel tank.

I do have the snowplow/ camper package with the extra leaf and I ordered a equalizer 1400/14000 hitch. More so for sway. Yes that cclb will be the next truck if needed. My door sticker payload is 3100 lbs. I’m in the process of installing an 27 gallon auxiliary tank now so that should help with fill up options.
I also have the 6.2 with the 4.30 rear end. I’m amazed at how many non-commercial guys pony up for the diesel over this setup.... it tows amazingly well. Of course the diesel does it better, but in my mind the gasser does a fantastic job and all that choose to be happy with it will be.
