Taking off bed...pointers?

Okay I am SICK of my gas gauges not working at all. They either read full or empty. I've had the new sending units for about 9 months now (yeah I know go and laugh) and I think Turkey Day weekend will be a good time to install those...along with my electric fans, 200A alt, and power steering pump/hoses.

So how do I go about pulling the bed?

I can and will if I need to...rent a cherry picker or could I man handle it off the frame with two or three people?

How do I get the old bolts off? I do have lots of air tools that I can get most stuff off with.

How many bolts are there?

I've heard the bed is relatively easy to get off. There should be six bolts holding the bed on, if you soak them overnight with rust buster, you should have no problem getting them off with air tools. Remember to disconnect the rear lights and fuel filler necks before removing the bed; it'll also help (weightwise) if you remove the tailgate first. After that, two people should have no problem sliding the bed backwards far enough to gain access to fuel pumps.

I planned to take off the tail gate, tail lights, and disconnect the fuel filler necks too.

Any ideas how much the bed weighs?

For a long bed, couple hundred pounds. We used to muscle 'em off with two guys, on with four.

It's a shotbox but 200lbs ain't bad at all. I think three of us should be able to move it about.

Thanks!

What hardware would you recommend to put it back on? Typically the bed bolts are shot after ten years or more, but would the dealership have the replacement bolts, and if so, is it worth it? Or would Grade 8 be a better choice?

I need to do the same swap soon.......

my 95 flareside took just two to remove but it might be lighter with its fiberglass bedsides. i suggest putting a heavy blanket on the cab to protect it i scratched the backof mine putting the bed back on, you cant really see it but it still made me mad.

They're carriage bolts. I don't remember ever seeing grade 8 carriage bolts. Most are grade 5's. Your local fastener dealer can help with that. If you're not going to be tieing a big honkin' camper to it, probably doesn't make much difference.

That reminds me ... I have a big honkin' camper!

I just changed both of mine and I took out the tanks.
I'd say each tank weighs about 30 lbs when empty and getting them empty was easy, held them up with my knee while I got the strap bolts started.

seems like taking off the bed is overkill too me

I just installed a new box on my 93 short box. the 4 of the bolts are funky oblong carrarge bolts that will strip out the box rather easily. i ended up having to grind off the heads in the box and install all new hardware. two guys can do it if you tall, but if you are not that tall its a awkward pain getting the box over the wheels if i had a third guy it would have been alot easier.
