exhaust
Some things to know about exhausts:
All glass pack mufflers are not the same. Thrush, Maremont, Smithy, etc. all are different designs, although similar.
The longer the muffler, the more mellow the tone. The less bends in the exhaust, the louder it will be. The longer the exhaust, the more smooth the note and quieter.
Glass pack mufflers sound best when placed closest to the manifolds with long tailpipes. The smaller the tailpipe the better 'rap' is produced, as in when you let off the gas, it will crackle and pop, giving a hot rod sound.
Large, long exhaust tips mellow the sound out. Turn down tips will reverberate making and echo sound.
Some glass pack mufflers can be mounted backwards to have a rougher sound, as opposed to a mellow tone. You can also burn the fiberglass out of them with gasoline before installing them if you want lots of noise.
I think the sound you are looking for can be achieved like this:
Run 2" exhaust completely straight out with as few bends as possible. Mount 2 12" Thrush glasspacks as close to the engine as you can. If will take a little while but the 'glass will eventually burn out and they will sound less muffled. This is a legal system as far as I know.
