checking motor mounts

My girlfriend and I were out of town for vacation, so I asked her Dad to come over and run my truck around the block a couple of times. He is sort of a talker, and doesn't know as much as he thinks he does, especially when it comes to cars.

Anyhow, when we got back from vacation he tells me one of the motor mounts is bad and needs to be replaced. He was saying it was shaking really bad and with the hood up could be seen at idle. I don't feel it when I drive it or see it with the hood up.

He has been wrong on these things before, so I sort of take his word with a grain a salt. But, is there a way to check this out? If a mount goes bad, shouldn't it be obvious or does it just depend? I plan on looking it over tomorrow and seeing what I can find out, but if there are some things to look for, I'd appreciate hearing it from you all.

You will definitely know if the mount is bad. If the drivers side mount is bad you will see the engine raise on the left side when you rev it. If it is an automatic, the engine will bang around when you put it in to gear. If you have any doubt that it is bad, then it probably isn't. If you want, you could have someone start the truck and put it in reverse and then drive, then reverse again while you look under the hood. If you see the engine lifting up much then there is a bad mount.
You can always just look at the mount to see if is bad. See if there are any cracks in the metal or if the rubber is really torn up. This is probably the best way to check the passanger side motor mount.
However, from what you say, I doubt that you have bad motor mounts.

Tell your girlfriend's dad to go smoke another joint. (I hate b.s.-ers)
Even a motor mount that is broken in two won't cause an engine to "vibrate" at idle. If your engine has a lope to it, that might be what he is seeing.
Like Seifferlein says, put it in gear and watch the engine. Keep the e-brake on and give it a little gas while it is in gear and you let out the clutch. Just remember, even new motor mounts will have a little movement. If the engine looks as if it is going to jump out of the engine compartment, the mount is bad. It will be obvious to you.
Try this in reverse, also.
