Stepping on the dimmer switch on the floor to get the high beams the other night, the headlights just went dark. Hitting the switch again brought back the low beams. Tried replacing the dimmer switch with no effect. Where should I look next?
No I haven't. With both high beams out at the same time, I presumed the problem must be elsewhere. But I will swap out a bulb tomorrow just to be sure.
High resistance in the grounds and wiring connections will eventually cause the circuit breaker in the headlight switch to trip. That might be what's happening.
You had one bright out for awhile and only noticed when the other went out. I worked at a red auto parts store for two years and this was the case every time.
IIRC when it trips all lights go out not just high beams.
If you run the relays for the head lights besides brighter it is less load on the switch / breaker.

I got bit by the both lights burned out bug a couple years ago on the wife's '06 HHR. She didn't notice that one was out but did notice when there was no light. I dove in, checking relays and fuses and was about to check for power at the sockets which is a huge pain in that car when it occurred to me to check the bulbs. Yup, both were burned out.

You were dead on right, it was a double blub burn out. Thanks all for your help!
Don't get sylvania bulbs as a replacement, they SUCK. I've gone through several on my truck. Sometimes the filament burns out after a few months, and other times, their thin cheap glass cracks. And they seem to be the only game in town around here. The xtra-visions from the McParts stores are really bad, but this last time I went to Walmart (expecting to find GEs) and they had suckvania too. But they had the standard non xtra-vision suckvanias, so I tried them. It's been a year, and they're still working, but the glass has cracked on one - but it still works.
I've had problems with their modern bulbs not lasting too. F them!

The blue package and the purple package sylvania are decent. It's the other ones that always burn out. If you look at the back of the package it shows a chart that shows a shorter lifespan.
