Recently I got a 2002 Explorer XLT with 4.6 v8, automatic transmission, and push button 4wd. What's the deal with the 4x4 auto button? I've read the owners manual, I understand it seems to be like a 4x4 on demand type thing but how do you know when it's activated? There's no light on the button and no indicator light on the dash. The 4x4 High and 4x4 Low both work and an indicator light is on the instrument panel when on. I've pushed the auto button and so far I notice no difference.
The auto button is simply to return you to the automatic mode after you've deployed 4x4 high or low, from my understanding.
I notice when driving my 2002 XLT that I very seldom have to use 4x4 high because the auto mode takes care of things. Low would be for off road or extremely low traction/low speed conditions. In short, 4x4 auto is the default mode for everyday driving. You don't "activate" it. There is no indicator light. Just like in other 4WD vehicles you don't have a light that indicates when you're in the default 2WD.
Thanks. I was just used to the style on my 93 Bronco where you just pushed the 4x4 button a second time to disengage it.
I've only had my Explorer a couple of months. It took me a little while to sort it out also. My other ride is a 2020 F 250 and there's not much question with that how the 4x4 works.
