Sorry if this has been covered but when I search I got a ridiculous amount of options...
I have a 2018 F250 XLT 6.2. I have a truck camper on the back. I am still at least 400lbs below GVWR so don't feel like I'm abusing it. Haven't done any off road stuff yet but not going to be crazy when I do.... I'm way past crazy age...lol
Only a couple of small issues so far at 20,000 but wondering if I should get the extended warranty. I'm not versed in truck repair so most things would require a mechanic for me.
Opinions? It's pretty spendy but so are some of the things that could break....
This topic has been discussed in numerous threads with lots of opinions. This is such a personal choice that no one can make it for you. The answer depends on many things including how long you intend on keeping the truck, number of miles you drive per year, your financial ability to cover a major, unexpected repair and your comfort level for risk or need for risk aversion. People in similar situations will fall on either side of the question so you are likely to get more conflicted about the choice than less by asking the question.
Here is a question for you. Assuming you can afford the ESP, are you comfortable with the real possibility that you will never use it?

Well, sir; I have never bought into the extended warranty and am WAAAAY ahead of the game. But then, I live just 70 miles from Vegas and have never lost a dime there either; nor have I won a dime. IMHO, extended warranty is just another way for someone to get their fingers into your wallet.
2017 F-250 KR 6.7. 77k on the odometer. Just picked it up from the shop. 3rd visit under ESP and it has paid for itself. I’d never own any car today without a good service contract. Let me know if you want a list of all that went wrong
Had one on my 2103 F350 KR. paid for itself with an EGR repair after manuf warranty expired. Had one on wifes Tbird. Paid for itself more then 2x. Bought one on my new 2021 F350 KR
In 2016 I purchased a f 250 with a 6.2 and hauled a palomino 8806 camper on the back, and in 208000 KM the the only parts that had to be changed was 2 front wheel bearings and 3 tail light bulbs. That being said I am not a fan of extended warranty. Now traded for a 2019 f 250 with a 6.2 and waiting for covid to end so we can start our travels again.

Gas engine trucks not such a big risk. Diesel engine trucks, very big risk. Very lucky for me I bought extended warranty on my 2005 F250 "Powerstroke". It had 3 $4,500 engine repair bills in 90,000 miles which seemed odd for an engine that Ford called "toughest in the industry". While the extended warranty covered the engine failures, it did not cover two ruined family vacations plus another stranding at night.
No more Ford diesel for me, I ordered a 2021 F350 with 7.3 V8. I do not plan on buying and extended warranty on this truck
I consider it cheap insurance. (About $1k for 6 years for my truck with low miles). Sunroof and all the electronic components are what made me want an ESP.
I've tossed around the idea for my diesel SD, if I decide to hold it long term I will most likely purchase the ESP. With the high cost of diesel repairs and with the electronic gadgetry and LED lights it seems worth it.
Out of curiosity I decided to put your gas SD in the quote and was really surprised to see the same price qouted as my diesel. I'm really not sure if I would purchase the ESP if I was in your shoes. Tough call.
Unless you are financially wealthy or a certified mechanic who can do major work on new vehicles, an extended warranty gives some piece of mind. I just took delivery of my 2020 F-250 yesterday and opted for the 7 year 100k bumper to bumper. One dropped tranny or rear end or engine failure and it paid for itself in one swoop. I had a F-150 work truck, not mine, that had the electrical system fried from a lightning strike......almost $2k to fix!
My warranty above....$3500 but gives me some piece of mind. May never use it, and that is okay. I can’t work on a new vehicle, too busy under the hood and plus, extended stay in the shop, they give me something to drive!
It's an insurance policy. As was written above, it just depends upon your risk aversion. It doesn't matter your mechanical ability, or that you are a tech mogul. It has nothing to do with either or those or other conditions. It's strictly your aversion to risk. Only you understand that personality trait so asking someone else if it's worth it is outside their expertise unless they are your psychiatrist and have done a thorough analysis on you.
If you want to have a discussion based upon logic, then it goes like this: Ford (and other providers) are making money on these policies. That means they take in more than they pay out. If they lost money on these, they wouldn't offer them. That would be a bad investment for them. So, the odds are that any repairs you have will not rise to the level of the plan's cost. Still with me? So, it's undeniably obvious that it's more likely than not, you will loose money on this deal. But remember that psychological part? Yes, the one where you have some risk aversion and it will help you sleep at night by having some insurance coverage? So, yeah, the logical part is relevant but it doesn't play much into your decision.
That you are asking just means you want to feel good about your decision.

Of course they are! So are insurance companies that insure homes, autos, health and the like. It’s planning for the unknown.
