Hey guys I'm buying an 77 F350 this week. Its got a 4 speed manual and its 2wd. What all is needed to do a c6 swap? Its a service truck for my company and I want my techs to be able to get in and drive. And not worry about clutches being blown out. Thanks in advance!!
You need a 2wd C6 with the correct bell to engine pattern. What engine do you have?
You need flex plate, shifter, NSS, possibly cross member change or mod, possible driveshaft mod, shifter and linkage, automatic model steering column if you are going to have a column shifter, kick down linkage from the carb, possible carb change if carb won't accept kickdown.
A '77...... Can't find something with an automatic already?
IMO these conversions on old trucks are a bothersome nuisance. Fine if it's your truck, you drive it, you know it. But you're going to put hired help in this thing. If something isn't right, will they just drive around in 1st or 2nd, or stay in 3rd until they stop and put it in park.... etc.
This just jumped out at us and was a decent deal, and I was kicking around the idea of doing a swap just because I know how people can be. Its a 400 with a 4 speed in it now. And I've never been a fan of the 4 speed, just as a question, would a zf 5 mount? I have a few of those laying around. Modifying the cross member or making a new one isn't that big of a deal, and I have a guy to modify driveshafts. I just wasn't sure on the older trucks what went into an auto swap. Our main service truck is a 96 F-350 with the 7.3
A zf5 would be a good swap. Has to be one from a 460. 7.3’s had a different bolt pattern. The zf5 also uses a hydraulic clutch so you have to address that issue too.

Yeah I was reading a Post where somebody extended the fork by 3" or so and made it a mechanical clutch

ZF to the 400 is a bit of a struggle due to clutch/input depth & some other issues.
A C6 would probably be fine. It can't be that difficult - just a lot of parts to round up. Overdrive would be real nice, but I'm guessing that there's nothing which will bolt to the 400, which doesn't require an add-on stand-alone controller.
