*****MY STORY*****

I have been researching oil for the last several weeks. Reading up in this and other forums. Looking at websites. Checking out prices everywhere I go.

This morning, I went to Tractor Supply. They carry Delo, Rotella, QS, Pennzoil and their own house brand ("Traveler Premium") 15w-40 API CH-4 diesel oils. They have quarts, gallon jugs, 2 gallon jugs, 2.5 gallon jugs and 5 gallon pails. Prices on the brand name stuff were not very spectacular, so I checked out a 5 gallon pail of the TSC Premium 15w-40. $27+. About $1.37 a quart. Not very good for a house brand.

I go over to the 1 qt. bottles to see what else they may have. To my surprise, 1 qt. bottles of the house 15w-40 are $1.02/ea! "What the . . . " I say to the wife. "The pricing guy is smoking some wacky weed". Then I notice, all of the oils is $1.02/qt. 10w-30, 10w-40, 20w-50, ND 30w. One price fits all.

I pick up 16 qts. (good to have a spare) and got to the check out counter. Total with tax is $16.78. That doesn't sound right. Look at the receipt, the oil is on sale for $0.97/qt.

I already have some $2.99 ($3.22 w/tax) Purolator oil filters from Sears. Another "one price fits all" store.

Oil = $16.78
Filter = $3.22
Total = $20.00

Nice!! Even if the oil isn't as good as the name brand stuff (no opinion given or implied), at that price you could afford to do it twice as often and still come out ahead. I think I'll take a ride to TSC this afternoon and see what's up.

I agree,,,Twice as much wouldn't hurt and it is cheap. I wonder if it is remanufactured or would you say reclaimed oil that is cleaned
and resold?

No. It's brand new oil. My guess is that they just price their quart bottles the same, regardless of the weight. $1.02/qt. is not that good of a price for house brand 10w-30 gasser oil, but it's a great price for 15w-40 diesel oil. Maybe they figure it all evens out.

I have read all the debate about premium oils and extended drain intervals. I used synthetics for a while too. I have decided that I will use the cheapest API certified oil that I can find and just change a little more often.

I enjoy the time in the barn with my truck. And with every auto parts store around here taking the used oil (at no charge), I don't even feel that eco-unfriendly.

OK. I went to the TSC website. Looks like I was right, they price all their oil the same $1.02/qt.

Also, the oil wasn't on sale. There is a 5% discount if you buy more than 10 individual quarts. That knocks a nickle off the price.

Only the TSC house brand is $1.02/qt. They have qts. of Pennzoil. Not sure the price, but Rotella is $2.04/qt.

is the rotella worth switching to? Ive been fairly happy with Penzoil in my diesel. I used it all the time in my gasser when i had it. Also, do you buy your oil filter from TSC? If so, it is the fram, right?

I have not used Rotella, so I cannot comment on it.

Lots of people like Pennzoil. Quakerstate is not well-respected, although I do not understand why.

I usually run Walmat SuperTech 2000 and have had not problems. SuperTech is rebottled QS.

I have a supply of Purolator Premium One filters that I bought at Sears for $2.99/ea ($1.99 on sale).

Purolator makes the Motorcraft filters and is generally considered to be a good quality brand.

Frams are not well thought of. For less than the cost of a Fram, you can get a genuine Motorcraft FL-1995 at Walmart. For just a little more, you can get a K&N, Mobil 1 or Purolator Pure One, which are considered the best spin-on filters.

What we have is a couple of loopholes. Sears prices all of its filters at $2.99. TSC prices all of its oil at $1.02/qt.

For use with PSD, we need the biggest oil filter and the most expensive grade of oil (15w-40 CH-4). So this one price fits all strategy works to the advantage of PSD owners.

If you needed a puny oil filter and 10w-30 oil, you can get it cheaper elsewhere.

Well for all of our company trucks, we buy the filters and Oil at CarQuest.. I believer that the filters are made by Wix and the Oil is made by Valvoline. We have no complaints on it.. Run the 15W-40 in all of our Cat, Mack Diesels no problems there... Maybe anther place to check out for filters and oil

Wix makes a good filter. NAPA filters are made by Wix.

If that is what you like then that is what you should use. I'm not trying to start an oil war. Just posting the info for those who are interested.
