What happens if the proper rivets are not used? Who can tell what the real rivets are compare to a rivet in your box? I have the proper size plus the ones from "Marti"
The ones from "Marti" are not complete rivets. No instructions from "Marti" so I used my own rivets. I can't tell the difference from the front.
Besides doing it my way the plate won't fall off It's on tight like it should be.
So what gives?

I would know. But with that said mine are pop riveted because when I redid my truck those were not reproduced and NOS ones were going for big money and even though I had big money in my truck I couldn't quite bring myself to pay for them. Now that they are down to 1.50 I may splurge.
Before you buy any look at these. The two newer ones came from "Marti" The two older ones I removed from the old tag.
The ones from "Marti" measure 1/8" just barely enough to go through the plate and door. I thought long and hard as to how to attach and get a good solid squeeze to make sure data plate does not fall off. So I will keep them in a envelope in the door pocket.
Thanks for posting that. I was going to buy some from Marti but I think I'll just use pop rivets now. Maybe if I was doing a restoration but my truck is modified so I'll go with secure instead of correct.
I have been told the original ones had what I would call blisters just like your reproduction ones. They would stick them in the hole and they had a small punch the size a little smaller than the inside diameter of the hole and they would tap the punch wit something I assume a small hammer and make the blister a dimple causing the sides to flare out.
I stuck them in the hole then used a small punch to punch out the center. I cant remember what size Marti recommended, but it worked like a champ. I have been thinking about this and I think Marti recommended using a 9/64th bit as a punch.
