Hey guys I have a 1996 standard cab F150. I want to mount a Uniden Bearcat PC68XL to the roof.
It weighs 3 lbs. What size self tappers do you recommend? I want to make sure they can hold the weight and keep it snug.
I’m not sure how that would work. It is only sheet metal. You would have to make sure you could screw into a cross brace. In the Bronco, I mounted the Cobra 29 to the front of the center console which obviously isn’t an option for you.
I've seen radios mounted from the roof BUT I'm not sure of the weight issue. I had a Cobra 19 III mounted in the floor but I put it in my car. The roof has a dropped section about 1/2 inch deep by 8 inches wide that runs from the windshield to the back so clearance for the screws is ok....just not sure what to use...lol.

So, if you really want to mount a CB to the roof, buy yourself a Nutsert or Riv-nut kit and use some short (3/8" or so X #10) machine screws. Self stripping, er, I mean self -tapping screws are a bad choice for anything that has weight and will be vibrating.
I worked in a 2 way radio shop many years ago. Some customers would ask we mount the radios to the roof and we would decline citing safety reasons. That said, I have not personally experienced any accessory mounted to the roof come undone without a great deal of advance warning. If I was of a mind to do so, I would use some sort of locking hardware rather than sheet metal screws.
Just a thought, I just went and looked at my Cobra 29, and thought of where to mount it. I have a plow controller, I’ll post a pic, but I thought the CB would fit down under the dash, ashtray area with out the controller there. A little bit low, but looks like it would work? I might try on the side of the aluminum box between the transfer case shifter.
There is also that cup/change holder on the front of the seat that clips on. Might be able to Fab something up on the studs to mount it there, if you don’t mind loosing the cup holder etc.
When you get it mounted, if you don’t mind post up a pic, I’d like to see it, and where you put it.
Also, x2 on the rivnuts, machine screws, and locktite.
Thats a good idea! I had a Cobra 19 III mounted to the front of the cup holder but took it out and pout it inmy car. I bought the Uniden for the truck. I may just mount mine on the top of the dash. I'll post pics when I get it installed. I just ordered an adjustablemount a few minuytes ago so it may be a week or so.
A decent magnet, maybe out of an old speaker, could show where the cross brace is in the ceiling. Put some paper under it if you're worried about snagging the headliner.
