Unless you are keeping your speed below 60 mph I think your MPG is about right given how much wind you are pushing with that trailer. Over 60 MPH the wind resistance means more to MPG than weight. For example I made a 427 mile round trip a few weeks ago to pick up this feed grinder. My trailer weighs 4k lbs. On the way down my average MPG was 9.9 running 70 mph. The grinder only weighs about 3,500 lbs, but is about 10 ft tall and has the aerodynamics of a sailboat with the sail still up. I forgot to reset the trip meter before heading home, but my trip average had dropped to 7.3 by the time I got home, which means I got a whopping 4.6 MPG coming home at 70 mph with this light load.
