Recently purchased a 2016 F150 5.0. Pulled the plastic drop in liner to prep for spray in liner and appears that previous owner had drilled holes and mounted a 5th wheel. Truck seems fine, but now I am thinking it has been overworked/ overloaded.
Anything I should be checking or getting serviced to tell if this truck is going to be a nightmare down the road?
is there any case where a 5th wheel makes sense and is within the F150’s capacity?
There are some 5th wheel trailers that are half ton specific. Is the floor warped? Does the rear diff cover look like the paint is burned off? Which rear end do you have?
You truck needs to probaly have a full fluid flush service. Have the holes in the bed welded up and vround smooth before the spray in is applied.

can’t tell if the paint is burned off. Will try to attach a pick in daylight tomorrow. The truck has seen a lot of gravel so a little dirty down there and light surface rust on rear end. Floor has one dent to the right of right holes. Looks pretty flat otherwise.
Did you buy this from a reputable dealer or was it a private sale? Is the plastic drop in bed liner brand spankin new? Maybe they wanted to hide the fact that it was worked hard and put away wet. If a dealer dropped the liner to hide the holes that is super shady. I'd call a lawyer and have him send a letter and get this settled.

Bought it from a Ford dealer
I don’t think the dealer did it because the truck was cleaned up well but I found some mulch under it.
You didn’t say mileage. But SERVICE THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL. The truck needs it anyway and most people won’t have already done it. It especially needs it if it was worked hard. Even more so if it has the super 8.8 like most 5.0s, although with that 3.73 you may have a 9.75.
More than likely you should do the transmission too.
Otherwise, unless you find something weird or broken, keep up on your maintenance and don’t sweat it. Even if something breaks, it’s more likely to be a wheel bearing or something like that than catastrophic failure on a well designed, reliable truck.
Truck has 38k miles on it now.
Carfax was clean. Recall for freezing door latch was only thing I saw negative besides already having 3 owners.
Report showed it had been serviced 4 times. Oil/ filter replaced, charging system, alignment, emissions -checked, washed/detailed.
What is a reasonable price for transmission and differential service?
Only 4 oil changes in 38k miles pulling heavy. It’s possible that one or two were done outside of the dealer documentation. The door latch recall isn’t a negative. 3 owners in 38k is.
If it is like one truck I bought it'll say nothing then you find out 2 years later it was in a wreck that caused $16k in damage.
Not worth the paper it's printed on...

Yeah, Carfax is a jumping off point - because service work isn't always reported to them unless it's been at a dealer. Even then not always. It is really only useful to see how many owners and who had it for how long.
If it looks like someone put a fifth wheel hitch in it, then I would be concerned and service the rear axle and have the trans inspected. They may also have put the rails in for a gooseneck, which could be worse - those can be loaded heavier than a lot of RVs.
The issue is, a lot of RV dealers will tell you that your truck can pull something that it...really shouldn't. With a 7k GVWR, I wouldn't put a fifth wheel behind that truck, but I'd consider a sizeable travel trailer. Heck I have had RV dealers try to sell me 14k GVWR fifth wheels when I pull in with my PowerWagon, and then get confused when I show them how, even though it's a 2500, it doesn't have the suspension to handle that much weight. It's only rated to about 8800 lbs GVWR.
With any luck, whoever tried it realized it wasn't going to work, cut their losses and traded this truck in on something bigger, and it's only been hitched up to whatever that trailer was once or twice.
If it runs fine and has no issues, I wouldn't go looking for problems. 3 Previous owners is weird in only 4 years, but who knows why they got rid of it. It was good enough for you to buy so just drive it for a while and if there is an issue I'm sure it will present itself.

Yeah, trying not to let it cause buyers remorse. Drive train is under warranty through November. It checked all the boxes when I was looking. I wouldn’t have known or worried if I never pulled the drop in liner out of the bed.
I wouldn't worry if you don't have reason to worry. Who knows what was pulled. Congrats on your new truck and enjoy it, life is too short. Drivetrain covered until November, sounds great. If something creeps into suspicion, although usually not a fan, you can always buy and extend the warranty,
