Does anyone have a recommend sources for replacement drums for my front drakes on my 1964 F100. The ones I purchased from O'reilly's seem ok but there are some variations.
Hi Michael, there are a few sources for drums. As you probably know by now, the hub and drum as an assembly is NLA, so you'll have to use your existing hubs with the new drums. Be sure to also use brand new wheel studs.
This business is a job for a machine shop or someone familiar with this procedure. They will use a big press, not a BFH. I bought cast, USA made drums, not composite. When retaining the original type drum brake system it's important to do it right, the front axle provides about 70% of the stopping power in any style brake system.
It isn't a bad idea to have the machinist make a very light "face cut" of the drums even though they are new, once everything is put together to ensure perfect concentricity. That's just a fancy way of saying "round". Sometimes drums haven't been stored properly, dropped off the shelf, whatever. This would be an excellent time to source new inner and outer wheel bearings and bearing cups for the hubs if the original bearings are not serviceable or getting a little long in the tooth.
Thank you, Tedster for your advice. Can you recommend a vendor for the drums, seals and studs? As I mentioned, I purchased drums from O'Reilly and seem ok but there are some variations. See the pic below showing the different in the edge of the drums.
Those look good, so long as the bolt pattern lines up and studs &c. (and they fit of course) you are good to go. Slight appearance difference doesn't always matter.
There is something something I've read about obtaining the correct length wheel studs. Can't remember the details. I must have ordered the wrong ones when I did my brake job, and got the right ones, or something. Maybe @NumberDummy has logged in lately. Check the forum archives here, he has undoubtedly provided Ford part #s for these before.
I would only add that the lack of the outer-most ring on that new drum decreases the effect of the labyrinth seal that occurs between the drum and the backing plate.

Labyrinth seal. Look at the big brain on Brad!
Just messing with ya. I've never heard it called that, but it makes perfect sense.

Dan, next time you pull me over, I'll do the get-out-of-jail-free mind warp, and show-off the real brain waves. Anyways, I'm an engineer and design ***** like that, so just comes naturally.
