PTO driven generator?
PTO driven generator?
Anyone ever heard of an after market company making a PTO driven gen set to fit on the 2020-2021 SD? Just curious instead of packing a generator around while boondocking....
I upfit these trucks and because of room they are limited to what can be mounted down there. Your best bet would be a hydraulically driven gen but it would not be cheap. There "may" be enough room on a 2 wheel drive truck but I have only seen one of them and it was awhile back. I just saw a aircompressor and hydraulic pump combined but no gen as of yet that I know of. Cj
Thanks CJ. I wouldn't be apposed to a generator using the truck engine. I think I seen a thread discussing a 5000w gen using the trucks electrical system. I have the dual batteries/dual alternator option on my truck. Just don't know if anyone makes anything that would connect to it to deliver 5000+ wats?
You're not going to get anywhere close to 5,000 watts out of the truck's alternators. 397 amps x 12 v = 4764 watts. That's assuming that there are no other loads from the truck (which would never be true) and that both alternators were constantly producing the maximum amps (also not going to happen).
Further, I would not want to gum up the emissions by running on my diesel truck, just to get AC power. Yes, Ford has a PTO option so it can be done.
Your RV has gobs of space on the roof for solar panels. I rarely run the on-board generator in my trailer because the solar provides plenty of power. The only exception is that I need to run the generator for the microwave and the air conditioning.

I did the PTO option on the last two trucks. Never went past pricing for either a gen or compressor. Prohibitivly expensive if you don't need it for a full time work truck. I suppose there is a good reason many commercial service trucks have those diesel gens and compressors mounted on the utility body.
FWIIW, we had 10-12K PTO driven hydraulic generators on some of our fire apparatus.
When they worked - they worked great. When they didn't they were very expensive to repair. When repair was no longer an option we lost generator capability on the rigs.

I do realize that the truck's electrical system will not get that much. Was just trying to figure something out. I dont have to worry about "gumming up" my truck. It's a gaser. And I already run solar. I just don't like a noisy generator and need the space in my truck box. And, I have used a generator in the past. I really don't need to be schooled by a teacher here. Looking for options is why I posted this thread.

Thanks. I guess I should've specified that I ordered an F350 pickup.
