I am having a problem with my little Mercury Topaz, not its bigger brother F-250. (Thankfully) But I think it is a valid exhaust issue for all vehicles.
It is a 2.3L auto. At speeds above 2800 rpms, the tach cuts out and goes to about 0 for a second or two, then back up. At 3000 rpms it happens constantly so that I cannot even drive 60. This is bad especially on hills.
I tried driving in 2nd for a while and since then it makes this loud noise coming from exhaust.
The muffler has not been replaced in 4 years. Could a problem with mufler/cat be a cause of this power loss?
yes, if you are getting too much back pressure from the cat then you would be screwed up, also because its ggot an ecm right? well i dont think backpressure is measured and sent to the ecm...so maybe...
It has gotten much worse yesterday. Cannot drive faster than about 45-50, the RPMs go down for longer and the exhaust is moderately loud. It's most likely the cat, it has to be. Altought my original theory was that it is the coil.
well you can have a muffler shop do a back pressure test for free, i did and i had 3psi which is high from what i understand, so i bought a bassani y pipe with a high flow cat just an excuse to put something else cool on your truck
