Blown head gasket.

the truck has over 100,000 miles on it but other then the white smoke and high idle it runs great. Should I put new rings and bearings when I rebuild it. Or go for a short block and rebuild the heads? The truck won't get run much just around town.

There's a good chance that smoke is coming from your valve seals and it's not your rings at all. The cheapest would be new valve seals yourself and no machine work. Seals and head gasket probably under $40. If your truck isn't getting run hard, you'll probably get away with it for a good amount of time. THEN ... You could find a cheapo junkyard pull or craigslist deal and spend time doing things right at your own pace and budget and still come in cheap. How much do you love it? Any idea why the head gasket? This should be addressed as well.

Blown head gasket

the smoke is white and the truck uses water. It was neglected by the previous owner who told me he wasn't a mechanic. I am slowly fixing things up on it as I get the money pretty soon I am going to have to fix the clutch and I think the head gasket, then I will learn about painting and body work.

it was a blown head gasket and a burned valve on the driver's side. got that fixed now to check the passenger side. by the way, had loose bolts all over the place. 4 bolts on the lower intake were tight the rest were just sitting there. got all the exhaust bolts out without breaking with a 1/4 in ratchet the head bolts were taken out with a 3/8 rachet.
