I have a 1990 F150 with a 302. Recently I noticed a funny smell and when ever I floor it going up hill I blow white smoke. I have been losing oil and coolent. Could this be the head gasket? Also my temp gauge dosn't work so I can't tell if I'm overheating. How hard is this to fix? Thanks for the help.
Could be a head gasket or a cracked head or two, but those are definitely the symptoms of head problems. They aren't terribly difficult to replace, but it's not a job for a beginner, and you'll need a good torque wrench, among other things. Whether it's the gaskets or the heads, you'll want to get the heads to a machine shop to be magnafluxed (checked for cracks). If they're ok, have them surfaced and put them back on. If either one is cracked, get a new one.
IT could also be the intake gasket where it meets the heads. It's a 5.0 thing. I replace at least one of these a month because over time the bolts stretch just a little bit and the gaskets can't seal anymore. Look for coolant near the front of the engine in the are of the intake - water pump.
I am not an expert by any means, mostly a shade tree mechanice. However, if he is getting water in his cylinders, and all he does is re work the heads, won't he have barring problems down the road, from the anti freeze getting in?

Not really. As long as the motor doesn't hydro-lock they can take a fair amount of abuse. An old school trick used to be water or aft down the carb to clean the cylinders.
