navigation issue

I have a 2018 xlt.Drove from michigan to florida yesterday.Navigation worked fine untill we had about 50 miles to go.A red circle with a line through it appeared that said gps.I assume I lost the gps signal. It really didnt matter at this point since we knew where we were going, but the screen was locked so I couldnt access the radio or anything else.I didn,t want to shut the truck off in case it had other issues until we got to our Florida home.Got to our destination, parked the truck and shut it off.Everything seems to work fine today.Any ideas?

Not a clue, unless it was a glitch. It would not hurt to disconnect the negative on the battery for the minute and reconnect.

My 2020 Lariat, Sync 3 once went totally black, on a road trip like you. I did shut it off, restart and worked fine ever since. a few months ago. If it happens again, I'd at least record it so you could show the Dealer. I do not have much faith in these electronics, everything is fine, until it isn't. At minimum, I would check that my Sync3 was up to date, in the menu, and the Navi if dated shouldn't be the issue.

The bad part is I just rolled over 36k miles last month. Before I hit 36k I was thinking I should take the truck to the dealer while still under the bumper to bumper warranty but I couldn,t find anything wrong with it!

I have had that happen a couple times in one week a year or so ago.
Look in your manual, there is a way to reset it as you are going down the road.

Perhaps a system glitch but, it could be the APIM is starting to act up.

These are known to be problematic.

Try a Master Reset of the SYNC 3 system.

If the problem persists or comes back, more than likely the APIM is on it’s way out and it’ll have to be replaced.

Just be aware that a master reset MIGHT wipe out any stored favorite destinations. For me it did it the first time but not the second time I did a master reset.

As for the No GPS icon, I get that a couple of times a year. Never caused me a problem. If I'm currently running an active route I can just pull over, shut the truck off and open the door to shut down the Infotainment System. After restarting the truck the Nav pickes up right where it left off. It seems that if Sync 3 Nav loses the satellite signals for any length of time its incapable of re-acquiring them without a power cycle.

Maybe Sync 4 will be better. But there's always Android Auto.

If you’re still under warranty and you don’t have an ESP, you really should take your vehicle in and have the APIM checked.

To have it replaced and depending on the dealer, you’re taking about $600.00-$1K.

The drivetrain warranty will not cover it.

I've had this happen once or twice on my 2017. It hasn't happened in a long time.
I wouldn't worry about it.

If it continues, keep in mind, you can buy an APIM on the interweb a whole lot cheaper than the Ford Dealer, just sayin. Maybe at minimum check the plugin connections.

Or just put in an aftermarket head unit that doesn't have these issues.

True, he can go aftermarket and have an overall better head unit but by the time one purchases a head unit, dash kit, and related harnesses, including installation, the price will easily exceed a new APIM.

I have a new APIM in my 2019 after I lost voice navigation commands after updating the maps with Ford-provided flash drive. Still, 3-1/2 months later, I have no voice commands. Worked until I installed the latest map update... 3 different times. I get the “no gps” symbol a lot since the APIM install.
