1995 f250 5.8 need help identifying a few things please - leaking problems

Hey all,

found a rusted out hole in a line and a few other things. If anybody has any links to anything that will show me the different pets of the vehicle etc it would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise here are some pictures of what I’m seeing

See the hole around the middle of the pic?

Seems like a leak on the right side of these lines, are they coolant or tranny fluid?

Is something missing on the left side?

Coolant lines?

I think the first pic is a coolant line of some sort.
The second is the Power Steering cooler, should have ATF in it.
Third is probably the rear main seal on your engine, or the seal on the china wall on the back of the intake manifold is blown out, and it's leaking down the back of the block. (Engine Oil)
Fourth is a heater hose. Has Coolant in it.
Fifth, transmission cooler, should be ATF
Last is also transmission cooler lines, ATF

Hi, happy to help. Answers in bold.

This is a thermactor line from the air pump / ‘Smog Pump’.

See the hole around the middle of the pic?

This is the power steering return line.

This is the bottom of the transmission bell. I’m going to assume that is oil, most likely leaking rear main oil seal or from the rear of the oil pan.
Seems like a leak on the right side of these lines, are they coolant or tranny fluid?

The open spot is for the spare tire jack. The part that is hinged and holds the jack is open right now, if you remove the butterfly nut, you can close it up so it doesn’t rattle around.

Is something missing on the left side?

This looks like a transmission cooler to me. Looks like the lines are leaking where they attach to the rubber lines that were spliced in.

Coolant lines?

If you follow these forward, they look like they are the same transmission cooler lines.

Cheers, 🍻. .

Replaced the alternator and the battery is testing good, and sometimes the blinkers won’t appear on the dash but they’ll be on outside and you hear them flashing. Do you have any resources or tips on flushing the coolant ? My reservoir is empty and rusty, under the radiator cap it’s a few inches down and green but some of the dirty rust apparent. Truck has 205,000 on it and just want to get it brought back up to speed...it also idles around 900-1000 rpm but occasionally will jump up to like 1500 for a period and go back down....lots of smoking from the pipes when it idles , could that be improved if it wasn’t straight piped?

I wouldn’t think the hole in that line would kill the engine. It’ll just leak air. And the smog system not work properly/efficiently.

Flushing the coolant. Coming from the diesel world... Drain the system, fill it with distilled water. And repeat until it’s clean. Don’t let it freeze overnight. Google that one. Tap water might work too, depending on your water quality where you are.

as far the idle is concerned, I think there are a few other members here who might be able to help with that better than myself. Could be several things. Sounds like a good tune up might be in order - rotor, cap, plugs, wires etc etc. Edit. Although, the spark plug wires look newish to me.
Is the check engine light on? Or have you checked for codes? That’s the part where others can chime in that are a lot more knowledgeable about the systems than I right now.

The smoking, my first guess would be rings. Does it burn much oil? Compression test?

Good luck with it,
Chers, 🍻

Replaced the map sensor and the engine light has gone away, went to have it tested and drove around nothing came up on the scanner and it didn’t die on me at all. Still idling around 1000 rpm but will keep driving around and see if anything changes. Hopefully get all the fluids flushed and replaced and work on seals/lines.

On those transmission cooler lines. I don’t know how far in the hard lines go, but you might want to put a couple of extra clamps on each one. I ran with 3 clamps on those on mine, no leaks. Just in case you haven’t, I’d check your transmission fluid level too before you drive it anymore as well as the power steering.

Cheers, 🍻
