2007 F-150 4.2 Problems

I acquired this truck with unknown maintenance history. for dirt cheap. It runs and drives, but it runs rough and is down on power. Also makes a slight ticking noise.

Codes are P2006, P0316, and P0303.

So far I have tried changing the plug on cyl3. Old one looked pretty icky. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. I'm thinking of checking the bushings on the IMRC system first and also pulling the valve cover on the passenger side to see if the ticking sound is something wrong in the top end or more serious.

Auto trans?
Ticking might be exhaust manifold leak. 'Down on power' might be exhaust restriction/cat converter. Change oil/filter - use Motorcraft 5W-20. Use an injector cleaner in each fill-up for the next five times. You might need to clean the MAF sensor and throttle body. These are minor steps that are cheap, except for the cat converters - definitely check those out. O2 sensor might also be bad or have a bad connection.

Good evening, thank you so much for your reply.

I ruled out O2 sensor and MAF because fuel trims are good.

I've tried three different fuel cleaners - Seafoam, MMO, and AMSOIL because that's what I had floating around.

I also ran CRC IVC through the intake to clean the top end.

I'm really hoping the problem is not a clogged cat because it was able to pass the smog with no issues and it's happily able to go 100mph, it just takes a while to get there.

I already cleaned the throttle body, it was pretty icky. The oil and filter are fresh, that is the first thing I did after buying the truck. I didn't use Motorcraft but that shouldn't be a problem.

I changed the ignition coil as well as plug and wire for cyl3. In went a Motorcraft out came an icky Autolite.

I'm thinking tomorrow I take off valve cover on that side and give it a look-see. If everything looks fine I'm pulling the intake and seeing if the IMRC system is fine or if the bushings are shot.

What's the 'IMRC'?
4.2L 5000 pound truck goes 100 mph and its 'down on power'? Obviously it could take a long time to get there but still, that's pretty good. What are you comparing the power to? Have you had a 4.2L in a truck before? Its not a powerhouse but should at least be peppy. Mine is a manual trans and I don't use 5th gear until I get over 50. Once in 5th, there is very little acceleration (3.31 rear). If I were trying to go 100, I would have to do it in 4th unless I had a straight of 10 miles or so.
Why did you pick #3 cyl to check the plug?
Its great your fuel trims are good - would've been good to know before I posted above. It also eliminates a lot of what I was thinking. Now you're in 'ignition system overhaul' territory since you already know one plug/coil was bad. Plus you still have to check for restricted exhaust.
If I had to guess, I would say you are going to find sludge under that rocker cover.

Yes I think sludge may be a problem ,would not hurt to use an engine flush .Repeated oil filter changes with cheap oil maybe use some and marvel m oil in between . I run one quart all the time. .I do an engine flush every other time but we have phasors and vcts with screens in it. dirty oil is a big problem.
On a 4.2 I don't know if you have an intake runner . control. Best to change out all plugs. Then look at mode six . The 4.2 is never going to be all that.
You can look for exhaust leaks with a tank vac blowing up tail pipe and spray soapy water ..Also change fuel filter. I like to use techron to clean injectors . But maybe you need to use a you tube injector setup for cleaning . .
Well p20006 is bank 1 intake manifold runner control stuck closed so I guess you may have one , plastic bushings do fail on linkage . The biggest problem is that when intake removed wires going inside are put underneath instead of on top linkage jamming linkage so watch out for that.

Thanks. I will remove intake and check bushings. If that resolves my rough idle and lack of power I will be rather pleased.

Truck has plenty of power now that the intake runner system is working properly. The passenger side rod was just dangling there. I reconnected it with a new bushing and so far the code for that hasn't come back.

However the truck still taps and idles rough.

Next up I guess I do have to pull that valve cover and see what's up. Hopefully just a loose rocker or something.
