I recently finished installing 3.73:1 gears in my 1956 Dana 44.You will need a new carrier for use with 19 spline axles. Yukon offers one. I purchased my carrier, gears, bearings, etc. through Rock Auto. Their online catalog says the carrier is USA Gear brand (which I believe is a division of Yukon). But, what I received was a Yukon carrier inside a Yukon box. So, it definitely can be done, but it requires an additional part. I did use USA brand gears. They are the lower cost gears offered by Yukon. But, they setup extremely easy with a great contact pattern and backlash using the pinion shim stack thickness that was being used with the old gear set.
Also, the new carrier uses a different carrier bearing than the original. Lastly, most all new gear sets for Dana 44 axles require a new pinion yoke as the newer pinions have 28 splines instead of the older 10 splines.

I am in the process of wiring my 51 F1 and put my fuse box behind the seat where the gas tank used to be (tank is now at the back - inbetween the frame rails).

That's a better answer. I had disregarded swapping out carriers.

Yeah, it can definitely be done. It takes more parts. But for my preference, in the end it's a better option because you keep the original rear axle in the truck. When I was younger, custom or "upgrading" stuff on cars and trucks was more important thinking it would always be better in the end. Now that I'm older, original is getting more important. Custom and "upgrading" usually ends up different with a new set of issues and not better.
