4wd not working

sounds to me like the motor at the back of the transfer case is bad.
Next steps to me would be to crawl under there and check it. Pull the wiring connector and ensure it is clean and try again.
then it is probably time for a new motor. You would take it off and see if it actuates disconnected from the transfer case.

yes they're on the list i've started along with rock auto, amazon, etc, etc. what about the fact that there is always a whine there as soon as the ign. switch is turned on? i put that in a previous post.

that is probably due to the motor not working correctly. if you were to just take it off there is not harm in doing so. Just secure the wiring.
Then you can see if the noise is still there too.

well, no go with a new motor. installed today and have new messages. first, like before, it says 4x4 i process. then, this is new, it says "shift delay- pull forward". i did just that and then it says "check 4x4" and a picture of a wrench. does the same forward or reverse, hi or low range, hubs in or out. so, still no 4x4. ???????
