Kind of an off shoot to my other post. Thought it best to keep them separated.
Maintenance on a diesel. Gas is easy. Change the oil and filter, put in an air cleaner every xxx miles.
What about Ford diesels? Do they spell it out pretty well, or is there better more effective options?
Change oil/filter, throw an air cleaner in every xxxx miles. Add DEF every few thousand miles. It's really not much different, I don't know why everyone gets all up in arms about maintenance on a diesel.
If you do your own work, the PSD is pretty easy. Oil/filter, air filter, def and fuel filters. Changing the upper filter, you have to be careful to not break anything. There are youtube videos and the like to help you out with the fittings. On your fuel system, drain the lower filter from time to time. If you are seeing much water, change your fuel filter sooner than recommended, but also change where you buy fuel. When you change your fuel filter, if it looks dirty, buy fuel somewhere else. Buy your fuel from hi-volume dealers, if you can. They will often have def at the pumps too. Def is def, don't buy jugs that have much crystallization on them, and don't spend $12 for def, I buy at a farm supply store and pay $7, $6 on sale.
Number one rule, if you put def in the diesel or gas in the diesel, do not turn the key. Do not leave the key with the truck for a tow truck driver. You will be all right if you put a couple of gallons of gas in your truck, but don't turn the key till you figure out what you want to do. If def is involved, the system has to be cleaned out.
Change Oil, Change Air Filter every other oil change, Change fuel filter every other oil change. Drain fuel filter once a month.
Not a big deal.
If you live in very cold country. You probably should add some anti Gel to your fuel if you will be below 0°
If your truck is parked outside and cold soaks at night at 0 or minus temps, You might want to plug it in.
Oh and most important, if you put DEF in your fuel tank you must sell your truck, camper, and anything else with an engine and buy yourself a pink battery powered scooter to drive around in.
