We are going to trade our 2019 6.2 gasser for a 2021 Diesel. I have never owned a diesel before. Biggest reason is we bought a 35' Fifth wheel. Pin weight around 2350 dry and 12,200 total weight dry. Planning on an F350 but not a dually. Are their any options for a diesel I should get that you wouldn't see with a gas? Planning on Lariat with ultimate package. I live in MN so cold weather is a reality.
Anything "extra" on the towing side? Camper package, fifth wheel prep. Anything else?
Make sure you get the supplemental heat. It may be a mandatory option in Minn., but make sure it is included. Heated front and rear seats. Block heater. I have no idea on towing options, so others will surely chime in.
Don't automatically think that since you're in MN that the truck has a block heater. Look at the window sticker to be sure it's there. Also check the truck. Plus is located in the opening between the tow hooks and up under the passenger side of the bumper.
I always get the snow plow prep and camper package. Get the supplemental heater too.
Keep in mine with a 5th wheel or a gooseneck, use the trailer GVW as the number to go by, not the dry weight, Once it left the factory, it has been gaining weight ever since.
Take 20% of the GVW to establish the king pin wt that goes against the payload.
Diesel-specific, I'd make sure it had a block heater at a minimum, heated seats and supplemental rapid heater would be good to have in cold weather. I bought a truck that didn't have upfitter switches and really wish I had them but that's user preference.
Since you are totally un accustomed to a diesel.......order a big red flag that pops out of the fuel door and waves in your face that says “DIESEL FUEL ONLY” when fueling. Just teasing!
I.E. don’t be one of “those” guys that had their head in a dark place when adding fuel/DEF to the new oil burner, There have been plenty of them.
Always best to send the old lady and the kids into the store, taking your cell phone with them when fueling up until you fully get your head around “DIESEL”.
Be sure to LOOK at the pump, and press the button that says “DIESEL”.
I am not being condescending here, so don’t take it that way. You would be surprised how many threads there have been about putting the wrong stuff in their fuel tanks.
Big one is the green handles at BP stations = unleaded gas. But in order for that to happen, they also had to press the wrong button. ( TWO errors )

I've got my first diesel ('21 F250 Limited) on order now and I've been telling myself these things over and over. I'm so used to not thinking while filling up, I'm trying to drill it in my head now.
Good advice.
I've rented diesels for years so I certainly get the "use the green handle" lol. I have to order the truck so I can put anything I want on it. I will pretty much copy my 2019 and upgrading the motor and F250 to 350. I want to see the payload the dealer estimates after the build. I was going to get the 7.3 Godzilla but the RV forums have me convinced to get the diesel. The heaters are a must around here. Supplimental 100% and even gas trucks on the plug in block heater.
Camper package and goose prep for sure. My 250 has a payload of 3145. Hoping the 350 with diesel will be higher. That would give more wiggle and stability room.
Any thoughts on what gears make the most sense? What kind of mileage are folks getting?
Power running boards or just standard? I have just chrome ones now. Hate the chrome. They never look clean and chrome bubbles easily.
I agree the chrome ones are hard to keep looking clean. I'm not sure how the power boards hold up in high slush areas, but they are lower and that helps when the elderly or knee type issues come into play.
My truck, a '19 F350 has a 3539 payload. If you get the lwb F350, you can get a 12400 gvwr vs the 11500 of the swb.
The camera package, camper springs, gooseneck prep, wheel liners and all the heaters. The Lariat Ultimate will throw in most of the other stuff. LEDS are great.
Love the power running boards. Out of sight except for when you need them.
LED lights, Absolutely, Towing I can never have enough light to see black angus cows on the road ahead.
My 2020 F350 CCSR Longbed Platinum is about 4000 lbs payload. A big improvement over my '17
My 2020 is getting about 2 mpg better than my '15 and and '17 did. Probably because of the 10 speed tranny My trucks all have the 3:55 rear end
My truck is still very new so I have not towed yet with winter and christmas season. I'll get cabin fever in January and hook up and go explore something.
But for my first 1100 miles it's just been getting the truck broke in, Which is giving me 16.5 mpg Lots of short trips and idling in cold weather,
I like the look of power running boards since they tuck up nice and out of the way. That said, I wouldn't trade my fixed running boards for them living in the salt belt. The fixed running boards keep the sides of the truck cleaner and keeps some of the rick chips off the sides. I had the chrome ones on my older Super Duty and agree, they bubble and are tough to keep clean. I have just the plain black plastic running boards on my current XLT and actually really like them, just a plain ole simple step.
