Turn off backup camera? Tailgate delete questions.
My 2020 is a plow truck. I remove the gate for the winter for better visibility. My 17 didn't have a camera, so it was fine. But when I ordered my 20 I wanted sync etc so it has the camera. With the tailgate off I get a bright blue screen and a message saying 'contact dealer'. Which isn't a huge deal, except it happens hundreds of times a day and it gets annoying, and the bright blue screen sucks.
Did you install the cable caps? This text is from page 72 of the 2020 Owners manual.
"You can remove the tailgate for more loading room.
1. Obtain the tailgate removal kit from the glove box.
2. Locate and disconnect the frame connections. They are on the left-hand side of the vehicle.
Note: Your vehicle may have up to three frame connections.
3. Install the caps from the tailgate removal kit on the in-line connectors that remain on the vehicle.
Note: If you do not install the caps on the connectors, some features may not operate as intended."

Of course I have the tailgate delete plugs installed. But that is all they are, simple blank plugs. There's nothing in them to tell the truck the tailgate/camera is rightfully gone. The truck senses there's no signal from the camera and puts the contact your dealer message up every single time you hit reverse.
Kindof silly if you ask me, and the bright blue screen is maddening after many hours of it popping up.
I'm looking for an aftermarket camera with this connection on it now, even if it's snow covered I won't have to push ok to the contact dealer message to adjust my radio settings all the time.

Any suggestions on brands would be great!

That's weird. I have a truck camper so I take my tailgate off a lot and never had any issues with the cameras. Mine has the 360 cameras but it just shows black in that section when it tries to stitch them together.
Another option would be to relocate the camera. I have a tommy lift installed and relocated the camera from the factory tailgate to the lower part of my tommy lift.

I only have the rear view camera so I don't get any other option.

I'd have to disassemble the factory trim each time I take the gate on and off. I run the gate 9 months a year easy, and enjoy the cameras full functionality then.

I wonder how much it would be to buy a 2nd camera so that you could leave the original in the tailgate. Might even be able to get a used camera and wiring at this point. Just a thought.

$250 for non-heated, $280 for heated. I bought one from camera source and mounted it on my spreader. It's plug & play, and works exactly like the tailgate camera, only on my salt spreader. https://camerasource.com/super-duty-...grade-cam.html

Do the guidelines also appear when this camera is in use?
This would work on a 5th wheel tailgate also. Good solution.
Thanks

No guidelines on the aftermarket camera. But in other ways it's better than factory as it has infrared LED's (night vision in pitch black) and heated lens. They have many other mount types, flush mount, hard mounts for high up on a utility body, etc, and they plug in to the same plug as the factory camera. Very happy with mine so far!
Only wish I had known about these before I ordered my F550 a year ago, as I ordered the factory camera ($400+ option) and it's super cheap, these are far superior!
I bought an aftermarket camera, one that attaches to the license plate. Had this on my 2015 F250. For my new 2021 F350, I had to get a new cable as the connector changed (of course). I bought the cable from an ebay seller. Took me about 15 min to rewire the camera to the new cable/plug, and 10 min to install. Works same as it did on my F250. I took off the tailgate right away, since I haul a truck camper.
