I have 1975 F-100 with a 360 and lately its had a loud tapping/ticking when driving it doesnt happen at idle in park or drive but only when RPM is above 1100. Oil was just changed and is at right level and I have no clue what it could be. please help thanks.
If it's in park and you rev it to 1100, do you hear the noise?
If so, and if the noise seems to be from the top part of the engine, I would suspect lifter(s) or an exhaust leak - in that order.
If the noise only happens under load (while driving) I would suspect piston slap or a wrist pin, or something in the lower end - although that noise is typically described as a knock as opposed to a tick/tap.
To check for an exhaust leak you can get a 3 foot section of garden hose, hold one end to your ear, then move the other around the exahust manifold to see if you can isolate it.
Other folks here can better describe how to check for lifters, etc.
Grab a length a vacuum hose and use it as a stethescope to listen at various points around your engine. I'd suspect the block mounted fuel pump if so equipped.
Just make sure the vehicle is in park, parking brake applied and wheels blocked before you take it above 1100 RPM.
I'll Cheack for exhaust leaks but I just replaced the gaskets by the way i have heddmen headers and i used copper seal collector gaskets and Felpro gasket to mount to head. It happens in park, neutral and any other gear for that matter but only above 1100 RPM.
Have hedmens also, I put the high temp. sealant around the opens on both sides of the mr. gasket gaskets..This stops a lot of the exhust leak ticking noise..If I wasn't so damn cheap I would get the copper ones..LOL..JMO..
