Automatic conversion 292

I posted this question in the transmission section, maybe it’ll gather some replies here. I’d really like to put an automatic behind my

1964 F100 , 292- 3 on the tree, short bed.

I have tried searching but came up empty on this topic.
I want to buy the flat o automatic conversion set up for my truck to install a C-4 . Any reviews, tips, comments on doing this?
is it a bolt on as I understand it or is there mods/welding/fabrication that still needs to be done? I also assume I need to have a driveshaft
made? What about a transmission cross member?
Just some quick calculations and it seams like an expensive project.
other options?

Thank You!

I looked a Flat-O-Matic and it comes up with flathead kits. That is going to be really expensive if that stuff will actually work on a "Y" block. Because you still have to buy a transmission, converter, flexplate, drive shaft and a shifter plus figure out a cooler. It would probably be cheaper and easier to either swap in an engine and transmission from a newer vehicle or sell your truck and buy one that has what you want. If it were mine I'd just keep grinding gears.

Look at this one here. Not a great web site for finding things, but I googled and it had a link to this one.

The Y-Block (flat-o.com)

The instructions on that same page seem to imply the truck adapter isn't yet available so the information and 1999 Copyright seem a bit dated. Hopefully they are still in business.

I know a man that put in an Ford automatic with an overdrive though he said C4 but did that come with an overdrive? Anyway he bought an adaptor for a 292 and made it work. I will ask him where he got it from.

Yes, I did this with my 64 F100 short bed with 292 motor. I used the kit from Flat-o-products, call and speak with Gene the owner he normally answers the phone very nice man. It is not an inexpensive upgrade but I am very happy with the results. I picked up a C4 at a swap meet and had it rebuilt. I took my existing drive shaft to a shop and had it shortened, new yoke and balanced. You will need a starter and decide how you plan on shifting the C4. I made mine a floor shift. You will not need a transmission cross member. The stock motor mounts for the 292 do the trick. I had also replaced my radiator with a new model with built in tranny cooler.
The Kit will include

¨ Custom Bell Housing
¨ Flywheel
¨ Flywheel Spacer
¨ Pilot Bushing
¨ Special Starter Drive
¨ All the Nuts and Bolts Needed
¨ InstructionsAgain not a cheap mod but very easy kit to install.

FO1000301 Ford “Y” Block to Ford AOD — Speed Gems (transmissionadapters.com) This is what he used for the adaptor and used a C6 transmission

Keep an eye on your final gear ratios as well. That rear end ratio may need to be changed in order to be happy with the top speed. Another potential cost to consider. The AOD or AODE would help with it being an overdrive tranny. I stuffed a 400 with a C6 into a old '60 f100 without changing out the rear, it could beat a stock Camaro to the next stop light, but would only do about 50 mph on the highway. (I was 17 when I did this )

Aren't all transmissions that are not overdrive tranny's whether they be auto or manual a final drive ratio of 1 to 1?

The absolutely vast majority are, yes.
There are some newer (post 1990) transmissions that have an OD ratio for top, but are not called "overdrive". Nothing I'd consider for one of our trucks, though.

I just completed the flat -O install with a C4. The kit for the F100 cost about $800. It fits like a glove, easy install. I replaced a A/T that had a habit of jumping out of park into reverse. not a good thing. My 64' is a long bed so I had to have a shaft made. you should replace the engine mounts at the same time, you will need a starter from a FE that you modify with a drive furnished in the kit. and a good 11" converter. I used a Lokar floor shifter that works well. good luck.

4800.
