low speed detonation

Hi there

I have a 1995 Ranger with a 2.3 liter and when it is idling (not in gear) sometimes the engine makes a diesel noise. (this is at operating temperature)

When I put in higher octane fuel the noise stops.

I have checked the vacuum system and changed the hoses. I also had the injectors cleaned.

Could it be the EGR is worn out?

I recently changed plugs and put in NGK V plugs.

Could it be that these are not the best match since I get some low speed detonation, or as some call it hot spots.

Thanks

My guess is that it would be some type of labor knock from running low-octane fuel??I haven't had any problems with my 2.3L on 87 octane.

Does your truck get enough hiway driving to prevent carbon build up? Try a tank of 94 octane and a double dose of fuel system cleaner this weekend &go for a hiway run.

I had the injectors cleaned recently and I do a lot of highway driving.

That is why I thought that it might be some sort of vacuum issue.

Since I changed vacuum hoses and pvc the only thing that was left seem to be the EGR.

Any suggestions?

Welcome to FTE saskatchewan,
When there is any dout or your searching for the truth, ask your car/truck what's wrong: pull the computer codes! Saves$$$.

That is a great idea but, what will I use to pull the codes?

The I/O port is right under the steering wheel isn't it?

Is there software available or a small hand hled device that can be used to do this?

Thanks

Hi saskatchewan,
Some automotive stores will pull codes for free! 2 are Advance + Auto Zone. Call + check first. I used a VOM (Volt-Ohm Meter) to pull my EEC-IV codes! It was awesome !

Go to the "sticky" posts here. There is a link to explain how to use your volt/ohm meter-VOM to pull codes. On that note, It looked to me that the info provided was not all inclusive for the Rangers. Does any one here know of a thread which will provide ALL the code info on ALL Rangers??????

Hi Ya! saskatchewan,

Wanted to add to yesterday's post.

While using my VOM (volt-ohm meter); first connecting jumper wires, using my Haynes Repair Manual; and has also been stated in this thread, that the info is also in the Sticky section inside of FTE.
I watched the needle move from left to right, telling me what my trouble codes were,

(All fixed for now, if the need is to know!)

While I was pulling my code, something unexpected happened,
my CEL (check engine light) was also flashing to the rhythm of the needle sweeping!

"THIS WAS AN AWSOME HAPPENING!"

It was quite an experience that I'll never forget!
I've never done any kind of diagnostics like this before!

"I DID IT AND SUCCEDED"!!

These have to be the greatist feelings in the world...

"THE FEELING OF SELF-ACCOMPLISHMENT"

And I must give a tremendous amount of credit, to the special people here at FTE, for the many ways that they have guided me with assistance; and just saying "THANK YOU" is not quite enough said! (stepman's got his 4-banger info together!)

And the comrodery that I have seen here between members...
this is not just a site... IT'S A BLOOM'IN< <==WXboy/Ken00~ FAMILY!

T-T-F-N...BUT-NEVER-FOR-EVER!

Not to contradict Wolfen, but I think that you can't do the VOM procedure on an EEC-V ('95 up) you do can do it on an EEC-IV (up to '94), it requires the diagnosis reader since is an OBDII PCM

Yep, 1995 was the first ODB-II.

Hi again all,

It's Cool! After seeing this post, I'm sure that others, along with myself, have now learned that ODB-II's came out in 95 and need another form of diagnostics to accomplish this feat!

This is what we need more of...group support!
Thank you for the lesson guy/gal <(political correctness!)

BUT...

I also, In my previous post, I did mention that saskatchewan had an optain to have his/her codes pulled at 2 automotive stores that would do this for free (but call to confirm).

And I also did say that I pulled my codes with my V-O-M; which just so happen to be EEC-IV's!

To Summarize; What I had said in my combined posts was: Some auto stores will pull saskatchewan's codes for free, What I did to accomplish my task at hand, Made mention that another person had seen the procedures that I had used in our FTE "sticky" posts, The way I personally felt about what I had accomplished and Thanked the people inside of FTE for there tremendous help!

WORD!

Yes. We must not forget the fact that to work on your Ranger is as good for you, as it is for your truck. Many here know it too!

Hi there

I have looked into getting a code reader and have had no luck finding a parts dealer that would loan or diagnose with one.

We can be a little behind the times here in Canada when it comes to service.

So, I have been looking at buying a code reader. The cut off point seems to be 1994 when they switched to the OBD II only style of reading.

I am not getting an engine light, I am just getting low speed detonation so, I might try a couple of things like changing plugs again to see if that would work.

However, if there are any other suggestions I am more than happy to hear them.

One thing you could try is doing a decarbonization, I used Sea Foam and it really worked. The smoke cloud is huge but the results are inmediate. Just a though
