Anyone ever had one break for no apparent reason? I stopped at a local farm this morning and bought 4 gallons of milk. Placed it in the back, closed the hatch in the normal way, and SMASH! Back glass just shattered.
Called Safelite, who in turn called Liberty Mutual. Still waiting to see if LM will cover it, as the reason I selected from Safelite's 100 choices was basically age and use because the Explorer is a 2002 with 109k on it. I don't have collision on such an old vehicle but do have comprehensive and full glass.
Won't be surprised if they deny it because it wasn't because of any of the other listed reasons like stone damage, animal contact, vandalism, etc.
Lesson learned today. Honesty is NOT always the best policy. I told Liberty Mutual just what happened. LM says that the damage is due to age & wear so no coverage.
Safelite was a huge pain in the *** to deal with. You have to call the 8xx phone number only to be directed to the website where you have to answer all kind of questions, some of which are about the glass that the average person would have no way of knowing. Can't just call a local Safelite and get an appointment.
I found a local installer instead. List on the glass is $900. It's probably going to cost me around $700 out of pocket.
Buying insurance on auto glass is equivalent to buying insurance against tire wear;
sanded\chipped\broken glass happens with normal driving\usage, just as tread wears down on tires.
Don't waste your money; insurance agents love to sale such ad-ons as they're pure profit.
Don't use "SafeLite" unless you like paying triple; they've got a huge advertising budget to finance.
Find a local Ma+Pa glass store.

Funny you should mention this. I got pissed chasing Safelite around so said screw 'em. Only I didn't say it that nicely. A quick online search turned up a local guy who's relatively new as an auto glass business owner, but he has a family member that's been doing it forever. I suspect the relative is doing most of the installs. He told me the same thing about Safelite.
As it turns out this guy is also well known as a contractor building some high end homes in the area and he and I have done business before. So it'll be replaced cheaper than Safelite and I'll be doing business with a local guy that I know.
I only have the glass coverage as it's part of the comprehensive I carry in the vehicle in case of a deer hit or other odd occurrence. Comp is relatively cheap.
On the bright side, this pissed me off enough to shop for new auto coverage. Had the declarations page in front of me, made sure to get the exact same or slightly better in some aspects coverage and saved over $500.
So long Liberty Mutual and thanks for nothing!
Insurance is a necessary evil, like taxes & death. I hate dealing with insurance agents; their parasitic business model is
inserting themselves into the middle of transactions, jack up prices & take big commissions, avoid payouts whenever possible.
Glad you found a better deal.

Brand new back glass installed this morning. The local guy sent a van down to the house and it was done in a fairly short time for $460 cash.
